In a sense -- and maybe this sounds weird, but -- while the film is outwardly about aliens contacting humankind, I almost see Roy Neary's experience as a metaphor for a religious conversion.
This is my take on the film as well.

Re: Rate The Last TV Show Episode You Watched

I'm not familiar with the Ellery Queen TV show but it sounds very interesting. I've been in a 70s TV show mood lately. I started the first season of The Mary Tyler Moore Show and also am going through The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries. That one is a show I remember watching as a kid but i was so y...

Re: STAR WARS EPISODE VIII: THE LAST JEDI - Official Thread SPOILERS!

I can't really explain it either. For whatever reason, the movie just worked for me. * timidly raises hand from the back of the forum * Ummm, I liked it too. It was definitely the STAR TREK: GENERATIONS of STAR WARS movies in that by the end the torch has finally been passed from the old heroes to ...

Re: STAR WARS EPISODE VIII: THE LAST JEDI - Official Thread SPOILERS!

Saw it this afternoon and enjoyed it. Time will tell if my opinion will change. My initial complaint is that the movie is way too long. I actually thought the movie was going to end as soon as the Resistance landed on the salt planet and then it went on for another twenty minutes. I liked the scenes...

Re: Where (and when) did you first see each of the Star Wars movies?

I saw STAR WARS in my hometown of Fallon, NV but don't quite remember when. I think it was in 1977 but it would have been fairly late in the year. I was six and didn't understand most of the movie. The next two are mixed up in my memory. I know I saw one in Fallon and the other while on vacation in ...

Re: This Week's Column - KL Studio Classics, WB Archive, 4K Wrap

Agree regarding the ratings of the Nolan movies. I had a similar experience with DUNKIRK in that the subwoofer was cranked to 11. I saw the movie in IMAX 70mm (like I was supposed to) and the first half hour was almost unbearable with the constant bass thumping of the sound design. (It probably didn...

Re: Quentin Tarantino's STAR TREK Warp Speeds to Pre-Production & HARD "R" RATING

So we have a Trek TV show whose episodes are either TV-14 or TV-MA on a streaming service you have to pay for. Now we'll get a Trek movie with an R rating. Not exactly a smart way to attract a younger generation of viewers to your franchise.

Re: Look, Another STAR WARS Trilogy Confirmed!

On the one hand, it's nice that these new movies will feature original characters in a new setting.

On the other hand, I am sick of Star Wars.

Re: Halloween Horror Marathon 2017

Yesterday I attended the fourth annual Dismember the Alamo horror marathon at my local Alamo Drafthouse. This is where they don’t tell you what movie you’re going to see and you only find out once the film starts rolling. I went two years ago and mostly enjoyed it so I thought I’d try again this ye...

Re: Halloween Horror Marathon 2017

CAT’S EYE 6/10 Like most horror anthology films, CAT’S EYE is a mixed bag. I haven’t seen it since the mid-80s and wondered how it held up and if it might be appropriate to show my kids. (Keep reading for the answer to the last question.) In preparation I read the two short stories by Stephen King t...

Re: SUPERMAN 188-Min. Extended Version -- Coming to Blu-Ray!

SUPERMAN is the first movie I remember seeing on TV and noticing footage that wasn't shown in the theater. Nice that they're including two versions although I still prefer the shorter theatrical cut. Donner's movies always seem to go on too long.

Disney's planned streaming service

The headline is about Marvel and Star Wars movies leaving Netflix and becoming part of Disney's planned streaming service but there's some other interesting info as well. There’ll be four or five original Disney-branded films made exclusively for the online service, as well as four-to-five original ...

quick correction on Daredevil...Elektra is played by Elodie Yung. Rossario Dawson plays Nurse Clare.

I'm almost done with season 2. It's been a bit of a slog but things are finally picking up near the end.
