Re: Movie Nights w/the Nephew thread

Introduced the nephew to Colonel Hans Landa in tonight's viewing of Inglourious Basterds. It was a BEEN-GO...!

So, a flat $19.99 each, or are there any coupons available?

Re: Weekend Box Office 2/12 - The Olympic Factor Hits

On the other hand, I have to confess I didn't much care for the original PADDINGTON despite all the glowing reviews it received. The first time through, I kind of shrugged it off as, "Well, that was cute", but watching it again recently before the sequel came out, it "clicked" for me. And the seque...

Re: Tomb Raider Reboot

There has never been -- nor will there ever be -- a good movie based on a video game. I saw a trailer while watching the Olympics. how are they already remaking this? Didn't the original come out in the 2000's? Even the second film came out in 2003, which was fifteen years ago now. The whole...

Re: Weekend Box Office 2/12 - The Olympic Factor Hits

How depressing that the shrill-looking Peter Rabbit has made more in a weekend than the utterly charming Paddington 2 has done in a month. :(

Re: V New Film Trilogy From Kenneth Johnson and relaunched "Desilu" Studios

On the heels of dreadful movies like Chappie and Bright , I have little use for yet another "subversive" sci-fi project using aliens or robots as thinly-veiled avatars for the problems of minorities. :? Yeah, the original V scared the crap out of me as a kid, but I doubt it's held up very well, and ...

Re: This Week's Column: Beware the Valentine...

Also find it funny that the critical blurb on the back simply states, "...a jungle adventure!" That'd be like a blurb on the back cover of The Avengers proclaiming it, "...a superhero movie!"

Re: Disney Announces ANOTHER Star Wars Trilogy from Game of Thrones Writers

I definitely agree with the larger point on movie tieins and even soundtracks being hugely diminished as the years have progressed and viewing habits have changed. Those things were souvenirs of the film for people to relive the movie when it wasn't available to them outside the theater. A relic of...

Re: Disney Announces ANOTHER Star Wars Trilogy from Game of Thrones Writers

Toy sales are never going to be that great as back then for the simple reason that back then, the toys were sold in the pre-home video era and were the only way for kids to re-experience the film after it was gone from theaters forever (and would be years away from being on TV). Today's kids can ju...

Re: Disney Announces ANOTHER Star Wars Trilogy from Game of Thrones Writers

In terms of the whole "nostalgia" thing -- I think that's the lamest excuse Hollywood has for feeding people this crap. They keep saying they are "giving people what they want" but I disagree. They are frankly OUT OF IDEAS. STAR WARS is making money -- well great, it's STAR WARS. It doesn't take mu...

Re: Disney Announces ANOTHER Star Wars Trilogy from Game of Thrones Writers

Continuous reboots and sequels are easy ways to make money in the short term but will be bad for the industry in the long term. Once nerds grow old, the audience will go with them. They are catering to the crowd that's there now but not cultivating the future with the mediocre retreads they are ser...

Re: CLOVERFIELD PARADOX Sold To Netflix, Now Available to Stream

We've really hit the wall in terms of studios desperate for any kind of "brand name" franchising when any random sci-fi script can have a few additional scenes shot to tie it in ever-so-tenuously to the Cloverfield "franchise". :? I mean, it'd be one thing if these movies actually did gradually tie ...

Re: CLOVERFIELD PARADOX Sold To Netflix, Now Available to Stream

7/10 All over the map, and painfully obvious it's an unrelated sci-fi project with the Cloverfield "brand name" slapped on it (it's akin to re-issuing Darkman and throwing in a post-credits scene where he runs into Nick Fury on the sidewalk  ), but it's also stylish, well-acted and rife with in...
