Re: BABY - SECRET OF THE LOST LEGEND (Kino Lorber) Blu-Ray Review

Personally I found The Golden Child score pretty dull and yet it was hyped as this undiscovered, rejected Barry classic. I got the LLL release when it was on sale for ten bucks, and I really enjoy the Barry score...and sound the "hip" Harold Faltermeyer replacement almost unlistenable, the kind of ...

Re: BABY - SECRET OF THE LOST LEGEND (Kino Lorber) Blu-Ray Review

I find Baby uneven, but I still enjoy it as a slice of somewhat-awkward "80's PG" (i.e. wholesome, innocuous family entertainment filled out with odd intrusions of violence, language and/or sex appeal that'd NEVER fly in the era where the PG rating has become so defanged it's almost indistinguishabl...

Re: BABY - SECRET OF THE LOST LEGEND (Kino Lorber) Blu-Ray Review

It's an upgrade for the interviews -- the a/v element is nearly a wash though. The transfer is from the exact same element, and indeed, the final horn fanfare is clipped here too, on both the 5.1 and 2.0 tracks. Must be a source issue, sadly, and I doubt Disney would ever bother to strike another m...

Re: BABY - SECRET OF THE LOST LEGEND (Kino Lorber) Blu-Ray Review

Sounds like a decent upgrade to the Mill Creek disc...does Goldsmith's final horn fanfare in the end credits get "clipped" like it did on the MC release?

- Anastasia (1997): 8.5/10 https://legendoflaura.files.wordpress.com/2013/09/anastasia-1997-di-02-di-to-l8.jpg Re-visited this for the first time in years (today's snow made me think of it...I always associate this film with wintertime), and it's held up over the last twenty years(!) surprisingly we...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

Like Ridley Scott's work, I feel there's a "contemporary" component to Spielberg's filmmaking that keeps his films fresh. Outside of elements that stamp a certain film as a product of its time, the way the characters react and act to each other in a Spielberg film is remarkably "current". JAWS is m...

Didn't notice it...could be compression. It's the music running under the interview endings, so either way it's definitely not a big deal.
Not a dealbreaker in any way, but it's just odd. The music sounds like a tinny, mono score recorded in 1956, so maybe that was the intention...?

Re: This Week's Column: MATINEE, Twilight Time & Kino Lorber New Releases

Picked up Matinee from the post office today, and gave it a watch tonight...what a charming, sweet and funny movie. :) The young leads are on the bland side (and the "greaser" boyfriend character seems very grafted on just to give the movie a modicum of "drama"), but the loving evocations of 50's an...

Re: TROY Director's Cut Wrecks James Horner's Score

CD or no CD, that's one of those cases where I could understand why they replaced his score. His approach was way too melodramatic, like a movie out of the 1950s. As music it was fine, but in terms of dramatic context, the approach was totally out of touch. But...isn't that what we're always compla...

Re: TROY Director's Cut Wrecks James Horner's Score

And of course, the theatrical cut is only on Blu-Ray -- in Greece and Poland! Always a pet peeve of mine...when the Blu-Ray only offers an inferior director's cut version of the movie. :x Then again, I didn't think much of Troy anyways back in the day (think I gave it a B-minus), and hated ...

The original Night Stalker movie was brilliant and it also demonstrated why the concept IMO did not work as a series where what was chillingly believable one time was boringly predictive week-to-week.
Still, without it we'd have no X-Files, so... 8)

Re: Movie Nights w/the Nephew thread

Got some Road Rage with the Nephew on tonight’s high octane double feature. First off, Edgar Wright’s delightful Baby Driver , one of last year’s best pure blasts of adrenaline, coasting along on one of the most infectious soundtracks of recent memory. Then, George Miller’s triumphant return to his ...

How did you feel about Timothy Dalton as Bond? Dalton is half-Spanish.
He certainly doesn't look it, whereas Alba looked like what she was...an extremely pretty, olive-skinned Latina with a blonde wig and blue contacts.

Re: Barbara Broccoli hints at possible female 007

I felt the same way when they cast Idris Elba as Roland Deschain in that lousy Dark Tower movie...I think Elba is a terrific actor with charisma to burn, but he is NOT the character as described in Stephen King's books, even taking his race out of the equation. In the books, Roland is described as "...
