Re: All Things Kurosawa

Sanshiro Sugata Part 2 (1945). This sequel to the original film shows the continuing process of enlightenment, growth, and maturity of its title character (and sees the return of several actors from the first installment). Sugata has a moral crisis over his commitment to judo and how his victories ...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

Williams' End Titles piece to Far and Away is one of my favorites of his, if not my all time favorite. Ridiculously great piece of music - I wish I had seen him conduct it live at some point. I have never seen Far and Away - shame they put Enya over the end credits score.

Re: Aliens vs Predator Films - Which Version?

I don't think that double feature Blu-Ray has the supplemental materials that the DVDs had though - cannot remember off the top of my head, but I think one of them had a separate disc of supplementals including a documentary (and both films I think had commentary tracks on the DVD). Andy, can you co...

Re: All Things Kurosawa

The Most Beautiful (1944). Kurosawa's second film was a semi-documenatry that followed the lives of a group of women working in a precision-optical factory during the war. They are given an increased load of work to do during an emergency quota period, and the film focuses on their happiness and so...

Sanshiro Sugata - Does the Criterion disc restore the 17 minutes? Have you watched Sanshiro Sugata Part Two? Unfortunately the footage does not exist (or so the title card says)...the Criterion DVD presents the re-release print from 1952 or 1953. I wish the footage was available - the film uses tit...

All Things Kurosawa

I decided to go back and watch all of Kurosawa's films (one per week or so) over the next several months for fun, so thought I'd start a thread to discuss and comment on his body of film work. Sanshiro Sugata (1943) - Kurosawa's first film follows protagonist Sanshiro Sugata, a strong yet wild and i...

Re: THE FURY - UK Special Edition Blu-Ray

Hans Zimmer would have written a better score...John Williams is overrated.  Your review here inspired me to listen to the score today at work. THE FURY gets lost in the shuffle of his more successful scores during that stretch, but totally agree with you on the music for the film. Peak W...

Re: This Week's Aisle Seat - A Frantic 4th Disc Frenzy

Prince also released a movie called Sign of the Times in 1987; it was a concert film that was filmed in the Netherlands somewhere. The footage was too dark (or something like that) so he ended up filming a lot of it at Paisley Park but using the audio from the performances in the Netherlands (I thin...

Dune Part II (7/10) In the book, Paul's younger sister Alia is born while he and his mother are still sheltering with the Fremen, but in this film she remains a fetus. Alia also acquires adult intelligence -- as well as prescience -- while still in the womb, though how and why is never really expla...

I saw one of the Mad Max films...cannot tell you whether it was the first or second film. I could not get into whichever one I saw, so I skipped the rest.

Re: KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES - Andy's Review

Also, William H. Macy's character was poorly defined and, ultimately, a totally missed opportunity to do something dramatically interesting. Agreed - it reminded me of Tim Robbin's character in War of the Worlds...waste of time having him there. Also - wondering what they can actually do with the f...

Re: KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES - Andy's Review

I enjoyed the movie...the voice acting was incredible and everyone deserves props for the amount of emotion and feeling they put into their dialogue. Personally I was never bored - while the story was predictable I still found the journey entertaining and, at times, moving. I did hear the nods to Go...

Re: LORD OF THE RINGS: THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM - Andy Serkis & Crew - 2026

No interest whatsoever. In retrospect, I still feel Jackson's LOTR films were really good (and I love Howard Shore's scores for them). THE HOBBIT was unnecessary (especially as three films). If anything THE HOBBIT may have been much better as two films at the most...but it certainly doesn't have the...
