Re: rate the last movie you saw

Mishima (6/10) Paul Schrader's 1985 film tells the story of Yukio Mishima, one of most esteemed and successful writers of 20th century Japan -- who shocked the nation when he took an army general captive, and then committed seppuku (i.e. ritual suicide) after delivering an impassioned speech about ...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

Tom Jones is one of my all-time favorites. I suppose I am biased, being a hopeless Anglophile and having a keen interest in the 18th century to begin with. However, Richardson's film is so inventive, and irresistibly effervescent. The movie's entire style must have seemed quite radical at the time, ...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

I don’t know a whole lot about the Russian Revolution so can’t comment on the historical accuracy of the movie, but as a piece of cinema I really enjoyed it. Nicholas & Alexandra is a favorite film of mine, and is (for me) a worthy companion piece to Doctor Zhivago. I've actually long-suspected tha...

Re: Filmstruck -- excellent streaming service for foreign / "art house" films

Still, for that price it's plenty attractive. I may give it a go for a month and see how it fares with my newer Roku model. There are a lot of Criterion titles I've never seen, but have wanted to -- I just didn't want to spend $25-$35 on a movie only to find I didn't like it! Filmstruck is thus a t...

Re: Filmstruck -- excellent streaming service for foreign / "art house" films

Haven't had any difficulties at all myself.

I access it through my computer though, not through a Blu-ray player or other device.

Filmstruck -- excellent streaming service for foreign / "art house" films

A friend of mine recently put me onto Filmstruck -- a new streaming service which offers a lot of foreign, indie and / or Criterion titles. I would particularly recommend it to fans of Japanese cinema -- most of Kurosawa's pictures are available there, as are a number of Masaki Kobayashi's films, al...

Re: Disney Announces ANOTHER Star Wars Trilogy from Game of Thrones Writers

All these sequels and "requels" seem destined to be the cinema equivalent of daytime soap operas -- i.e. made cheaply and quickly in rapid succession to satisfy the demands of an audience, but with little regard for artistry and originality.

Re: Actors whose careers died/faded/never took off

Still, I'd love to see that alternate universe version of Raiders with him as Indy...a decade later we got a vague taste of what his performance might have been like in the terrific Aussie Western Quigley Down Under . Don't forget High Road to China! No...just kidding. By all means, forge...

Re: Secret Of NIMH remake...?!

Nimoy hosted a show called STANDBY LIGHTS CAMERA ACTION for Nickeoldeon back in the 80s -- it was apparently quite good, I only saw bits of it as cable wasn't available to us back then, but it was a behind-the-scenes show aimed at kids with quality footage. I hope someday that broadcast quality tap...

Re: Actors whose careers died/faded/never took off

Also, imagine Tom Selleck as Indiana Jones. I love Harrison Ford, he was great as Indiana Jones, but I get wistful when I think about Selleck in the role. Not that he even would have been "better" necessarily, it's just that Ford was already Han Solo, and Selleck would have been a bit more of a bre...

Re: 2001 Headed to 4K UHD in 2018!

Too many numbers in this thread title! I can't cope!

But seriously...ought to look amazing in 4K. I have not watched this film in probably 8-9 years.

Re: rate the last movie you saw

Baby Driver (6/10) An interest-holding two hours (with well-staged stunt work) but otherwise a generally unoriginal pastiche of Drive and The Italian Job, with a pinch of Rebel Without A Cause thrown in. Baby Driver does have some definite strengths -- excellent performances from the entire cast, a...

Re: Oscars 2018 - Nominations

...it's not like there haven't been some ridiculous nominees for Best Picture over the years, even in the days when there were only five nominees (wasn't Chocolat nominated for BP? Who the hell remembers THAT?), I remember the film actually...but not that it was nominated! Truth be told I couldn't ...
