Re: THE LION IN WINTER Coming on 4K UHD

Great news! This one’s a favorite of mine.

Is this a new transfer? I was wondering because I didn’t really care for the sound on the previous Blu-ray releases. There's a little too much noise reduction!

Re: Ridley Scott's Napoleon - Director's Cut Now Streaming

Review of the new cut: https://x.com/FDRLST/status/1835673743458181507 The reviewer notes “ Napoleon is far from a trainwreck". Well yes, because you can't have a trainwreck until you gain momentum...which this movie never does. I do take exception to the way the reviewer compares Napoleon to ...

Re: RIP James Earl Jones

One of the truly great actors of the 20th century. And while I love Star Wars (and his his contribution to it), I think it's a bit of shame most people seem unaware of anything beyond Star Wars or Field of Dreams . He was a lot more than that... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVyvwZ_Yh0g https://ww...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

I have never seen Far and Away - shame they put Enya over the end credits score. It's a wonderful film, and definitely worth a look. I was talking to Andy the other night, and he blamed its poor reviews on critics being down on Tom Cruise at the time. The trailers for the film were also p...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

Far and Away (8.5/10) This is the first time I've watched this film since around 1993. Far and Away is a classic -- but sadly an unrecognized one. I call it "the best film John Ford never made". Fortunately screenwriter Bob Dolman and Ron Howard's did make it, and for me, this is Howard's...

Re: Halloween Horror Marathon 2024

Season of the Witch (4/10) I was scouring Amazon for something to watch the other night, and came across this movie, which -- according to the product description -- was directed by Wolfgang Petersen. I was was surprised I'd never heard of it but the premise was intriguing -- dealing with witchcraf...

Re: All Things Kurosawa

Sanshiro Sugata I went to watch this one a couple of years ago. I don't remember much about it. (I might not have even finished it!) Kurosawa is The Master as far as I'm concerned, but I found Sanshiro Sugata a curious portent of things to come, but not really that exciting in and of itself. I was ...

(Fairly) new Blade Runner documentary

Another accidental Youtube discovery -- this Geman TV retrospective / documentary on Blade Runner , from 2020. I haven't watched the whole thing but so far it is very interesting. New comments from Ridley Scott, Syd Mead, Edward James Olmos, Douglas Trumbull and Paul M Sammon. As it was made for Ger...

Re: RDJ back in the MCU...as Doctor Doom?!

I can't remember much of anything about Endgame, except for the CGI-embellished big brother from Goonies trying to destroy the world, and about a thousand "main characters" trying to stop him and in a big battle that looks like every other big battle from the past 15 years.

Re: ALIEN: ROMULUS - August - Fede Alvarez, Star-Free Cast - Trailer

It's gonna take all of the actors from worn-out franchises from the late 70s through the mid-90s being dead before we're finally purged of the "requel" crap, and even then studios will just deepfake dead actors to keep them going a little while longer. :? https://www.piratesandprincesses....

Re: ALIEN: ROMULUS - August - Fede Alvarez, Star-Free Cast - Trailer

Sometimes I wonder why they keep trying to wring momey out of this series, because the last time an installment was genuinely liked by the public was in 1986. It seems to me studios would rather bank on a property they own, than take a chance on something new. I can only speak as a viewer, but most...

The same beverage we've been imbibing since 1979, only poured into a new, leakier container... So, it's merely another "requel" (to use Andy's term)? Sequels have the potential to be original and compelling ( Bond is proof of that), but why must movies these days forever repurpose stale t...

Re: THE FURY - UK Special Edition Blu-Ray

Yes that synth is the most "70s sounding" synth in any Williams score, ever, I'd imagine! I'm also glad he re-recorded that score in London. Why didn't he record it in London to begin with? THE FURY was a pretty big budgeted movie for Fox, I would've thought they might've had rolled out th...
