Re: rate the last movie you saw

The Creator (7/10) A watchable, sometimes engaging (and at its climax genuinely touching) sci-fi yarn -- but one that is compromised by unoriginality. I got the sense from the trailer this would be an edgier, more imaginitive film that deals with the moral and social ramifications of A.I. While it ...

Re: 1492 - Ridley Scott Hopes for 4-Hour Streaming Version

I'd be curious to see it. I think dubbing Depardieu would help.

Tho what I'd rather see is a Blu-ray release with isolated music!

Re: rate the last movie you saw

Music by John Williams (8.5/10) While not devoid of some imperfections and disappointments, this is a more than solid documentary, and overall very enjoyable. I also learned a few things I didn't know, even as a hard core Williams fanatic going back to 1977. I won't give away any of the tidbits, bu...

Re: RIP Teri Garr

A wonderful actress -- charming, funny, cute, but also able to believably channel despair, and rage (as in the fight between Ronnie and Roy in Close Encounters).

I feel terrible tho -- I don't know why, but for some reason I was under the impression she had already passed away years ago.

Re: Halloween Horror Marathon 2024

The movie remains divisive to this day -- some, like myself, loving its innovative structure and production style, while others found it a nausea-inducing chore where "nothing happens" -- and yet there's no denying it was a movie that invented its own horror subgenre, one that's still bei...

Re: Halloween Horror Marathon 2024

The Ninth Gate (6.5/10) This 1999 Roman Polanski effort comes off as a less-stylish (and much-less atmospheric) retread of Angel Heart , with a bit of Eyes Wide Shut at its climax -- as well elements of Polanski's own Frantic . For most of its running time The Ninth Gate was a captivating yarn that...

Re: Halloween Horror Marathon 2024

The Mummy (1932) (6/10) Somehow I stumbled into adulthood having never seen this movie. And it is astonishing to consider this movie will literally be a century old within a few years. Still, I don't think it has dated well. I guess I was expecting something a little more like Frankenstein ...

Re: WB Burying Clint Eastwood's JUROR NO. 2

Eastwood has generated more than two BILLION for WB over the last fifty years. This is shameful . :x Of course the new regime at Warners (and every studio really) is far-removed from that of the old. I doubt they care about anyone's creative legacy...unless of course it's generating a profit. I rem...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

All in all the film is very faithful to the book (the boat chase scene is not in the book), and I agree that the final climax could have been filmed/staged better. Maybe the reason the filmmakers included the above is because they wanted to be faithful to the adaptation? I understand the desire to ...

From Russia With Love (7.5/10) Maybe it was my mood (I hope I'm not becoming jaded), but I really couldn't get to into this movie on my latest viewing (last time I screened it was in 2012). It is certainly a watchable film, and isn't without some impressive sequences (the fight between Bond and Red...

Re: Halloween Horror Marathon 2024

Arguably the apex of the 1950s "Big Bug" sci-fi/horror cycle, Them! is terrific stuff, with efficient direction from B-movie specialist Gordon Douglas and a taut score from Bronislau Kaper that keeps the film's somewhat wooden paper-mache bugs nice and scary. Them! is the Citizen Kane of ...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

Alien Romulus (8.5/10) Let me qualify my rating of 8.5/10 - this would be 8.5/10 by the standards of today's paltry cinema offerings. Still, had this exact same movie been made in 1989, I might have given it a solid 8. I thought it was terrific. Yes, it cribs from previous Alien movies, and it does...

Re: Happy Columbus Day: A Look Back at 1492 & CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS: THE DISCOVERY

One thing I found utterly hilarious about Christopher Columbus: The Discovery was that the actress cast as the chief's daughter was clearly chosen for no other reason than her humungous "Penthouse" breasts. She is topless in every scene -- and always framed in such a way as to show-off her...

Re: Halloween Horror Marathon 2024

38.) Lucky Bastard (2013) 5/10 I love Lukas, but I don't know what he was on about with this one. The "message" of the film is something of a head-scratcher; the opening title card moralistically condemns adult entertainment -- but the ensuing film treats the viewer to loads of busty nake...
