Thanks for the thoughtful reply, Eric! I did not realize you were so steeped in Giacchino's music, so I apologize if my post came off assuming the opposite. I think part of my philosophy with today's crop of film/TV composers is "You take what you can get". I started listening to classical...

OK, since it was me who made that comparison between Barry and Giacchino on the FSM, I guess I need to explain what I meant here as well. I did not mean that their respective compositions for strings sound anything alike, but that, to my ears, when I hear Giacchino's writing for strings I can recogn...

I thought of another point about a moment in STAR WARS history tonight. Yes, I am of that generation that thinks of SW even though I own no collectibles and don't think very highly of Spielberg/Lucas...anyway. Have you noticed that the scene in JEDI where Vader tosses the Emperor, that it's hard to...

Given the fan following behind the soundtracks, I was willing to see if the scores might possibly be enjoyable apart from the film. But I have listened, and re-listened to this music a number of times since the films were released, and I repeatedly ask myself "What are people talking about?&qu...

Now, admittedly, I think the original album releases work better as a listening experience than the extended editions, but there is so much love and attention given to every single aspects of the LOTR films that I can't imagine simply dismissing them outright. I don't "hate" or have a str...

I don't see how someone could listen to "The Breaking of the Fellowship" and find it cold in tone. I've also never been the biggest Shore fan and was skeptical of his involvement from the get-go, but as soon as heard FOTR back in 2001, I was hooked and loved everything he did for the films...

Andy, how would rate this installment in comparison to the others? Admittedly, I've always been a much bigger fan of Goldsmith's scores for the series than the films themselves, but I still enjoyed what I saw in I-III, so I was just curious...

I thought about this while watching the Dangerous Days doc on the BR set - what the heck HAS Sean Young been doing the past decade or so? I guess I have my answer. Still, though, don't moments like that at the DGA awards really liven up such an event? :)

It will convince the average viewer to open up that dictionary and learn some new words! :) And I like that it essentially means the smallest amount of compassion for another person, which could refer to either Bond or one of the other characters in the film. And the fact that the producers did stay...

In looking at the AVP films as just part of the ALIEN franchise, it continues the feeling that each new chapter is somehow making amends for the one before it. ALIEN 3 was disliked by so many people that Fox felt ALIEN RESURRECTION could make amends by adding in more of the aliens, action with big g...

It stills too soon after the mini-series in 2000. Both film and TV versions of the book have their strengths and weaknesses, but I just fail to see the point in yet another version. I really enjoyed the sequel mini-series, CHILDREN OF DUNE, more than DUNE and would have liked to have seen the same p...

Wow, I am quite shocked at the take, but counter-programming sometimes actually works, as opposed to GRINDHOUSE opening on Easter. I guess the studio could attempt to make this into a unforeseen trilogy, focused on Earth, with the last chapter perhaps jumping forward in time enough to include space ...

Goodness gracious, that sounds bad. It sounds as gory and mean-spirited as what I've read about the SAW and HOSTEL films, which I could never in a million years sit through, and this disappoints me. You know, I used to sheepishly admit that I mostly enjoyed the first AVP, especially in its longer cu...

What the hell has been up with Nicholas Cage's roles in the past few years? Many of the films have not even been screened for the critics. Dude, get a new agent!
