Re: The Abyss Trailer

When I saw the title of this thread, my first thought was "Oh, they're remaking that too?"

Re: rate the last movie you saw

But so obsessed was Lucas on this point that he felt compelled to tinker further with ESB and swap out the original voice of Boba (actor Jason Wingreen from the classic Trek episode "The Empath" and several TZ episodes) with the Jango Fett actor which is another example of his lame tinker...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

Star Wars: Attack of the Clones (6.5/10) I'll start by saying this there are some good things in this movie. The effects are excellent, and more "crisp"-looking than those of The Phantom Menace . The fight between Yoda and Count Dooku is among the best moments in the entire Star Wars saga...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (7/10) On a whim I pulled this one off the shelf tonight for another viewing (my first since 2016). I have to say this movie isn't standing the test of time. In the past I found The Phantom Menace enjoyable, exciting and appreciably sincere. I certainly thought it had ...

Re: Halloween Horror Marathon 2023

Dracula (1979) -- German Blu-ray (8.5/10) This is still the greatest adaptation of Bram Stoker's book -- and certainly the most uptown, with some of the all-time most talented people in cinema on hand to contribute. Frank Langella's remains the best and most believable interpretation of the Count D...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

Shutter Island (3/10) SPOILERS!!! Leonardo DeCaprio plays a federal marshal investigating the escape of an inmate from a maximum-security insane asylum (which is located on a supposedly inescapable island). The body of the film is a very well-acted, and often-suspenseful thriller. But the ending ru...

Re: Halloween Horror Marathon 2023

The only disappointment of The Blob is Dov Hoenig's chintzy electronic score, which does the movie no favors. The filmmakers obviously blew most of the budget on the creature F/X, and there was little left over to hire the services of an orchestra Michael Hoenig actually. (Dov Hoenig is an editor.)...

Re: Halloween Horror Marathon 2023

^^ Strong agreement on The (1988) Blob , which is by far the best of the three incarnations (the less said of Beware The Blob the better!). I liked how the filmmakers made the monster a government experiment gone wrong, as opposed to an unexplained “weird thing from outer space”. I also appreciated ...

Re: Halloween Horror Marathon 2023

Polanski's film remains one of the great psychological pressure-cooker thrillers of all time, showing the audience almost nothing while keeping the gradually increasing tension percolating nicely. Farrow is the key to it all working, selling Rosemary's gradual descent into anxiety-laden mistrust, c...

One of the most disturbing, gross movies I've ever watched. With almost nil entertainment value to redeem it.

Re: rate the last movie you saw

Hasn't been a great week for movie choices... Cocaine Bear (2/10) Okay, I wasn't expecting Citizen Kane , but this movie is devoid of virtually any redeeming qualities. It's comedic aspirations are sabotaged by needlessly gut-wrenching violence and gore -- plus the fact none of the humor is actually...

Re: Halloween Horror Marathon 2023

An early effort from Aussie filmmaker Richard Franklin ( Road Games , Psycho II ), Patrick takes a gimmicky, apparently limited idea and wrings a good deal of suspenseful juice out of it, with Hitchcockian camerawork and effective performances giving the claustrophobic settings a sense of palpable ...

Re: Ridley Scott's Napoleon - November 22nd (Theaters Before Apple+) - Trailer

This does not instill confidence. Another fast moving Scott production rolling off the assembly line... You have to admire Scott's efficiency as a director -- but I find that movies that are quickly and efficiently made usually lack dramatic tension, and are generally not very immersive experiences...

Shame he'll only mainly be remembered as "The second Dumbledore". :? At least he will be remembered for something ! But I hear you. Gambon played a lot of far-more interesting and complex roles. I was always a big fan of his work -- he was incredible in The Singing Detective , wonderful i...
