Re: WONDER WOMAN - 2017

I still find scores that I enjoy, albeit nowhere near at the frequency I did in my youth. As I've said before, I really did like the scores for "Gravity" and "Interstellar". There were a lot of cues written for LOST that I really liked. And there's a lot of the music of "Gam...

Re: RIP Roger Moore

I was greatly saddened to read of this today. Roger Moore was the first Bond I saw on film, with The Spy Who Loved Me, which I remember seeing in the theater with my family way, way back in the day. By all accounts, he was a class act and a very decent man. And while some of his Bond films were ridi...

Re: RIP Jonathan Demme

Demme had apparently been fighting cancer for some time.
I will remember him for various good films, but my favorites are Melvin & Howard, and the superlative Stop Making Sense.

Re: Guess it's official -- Williams scoring Indy 5

It occurs to me that when they shoot this movie, presumably in 2019, Harrison Ford at 77 will be older than George Hall was when he played "Old Indy" in the Young Indiana Jones series.
That says a lot.

I'm curious to see if they have any bonus features on "Who'll Stop The Rain" aka "Dog Soldiers".

Re: STAR WARS EPISODE VIII: THE LAST JEDI - Trailer

Having just finally sat through Gilroy's Rogue One and now this trailer, I can say that I have had the same "meh" reaction. Nothing like the reactions I had in seeing the trailers to Empire and particularly Jedi, where I really wanted to see the movie as soon as possible. And not even the ...

Re: JURASSIC PARK Revisited

I enjoyed Jurassic Park when I first saw it in theaters, but I had major troubles with it even then. It's probably grown on me a little since then, but the basic issues remain. The condensation of the book into the movie is fine in some areas, but the focus on whether Dr. Grant is ready to deal with...

Re: THE THING - Shout Factory Sept: New 2K Transfer, Extras!

Does anyone know at what point the Russell/Carpenter commentary was edited? I had originally purchased the first DVD release of The Thing in 1998, but sold that copy when Universal re-released it with an anamorphic transfer a few years later. I continue to have the anamorphic DVD copy up in my attic...

Re: INCREDIBLE HULK - TV Series Revisitation Thread

My understanding of the intended series finale for The Incredible Hulk is that Kenny never actually wrote it. It was more of an idea he had about where he wanted to go for the ending. The one thing he told me about it was that he wanted David Banner to be able to cure himself. I've heard speculation...

Re: INCREDIBLE HULK - TV Series Revisitation Thread

A few thoughts on this, given my own experience with the show and with its creator, Kenneth Johnson. First, as I may have indicated in the past, if you go to Kenny's website and go to his Hulk page, you'll find a list I compiled in Berkeley back in the early 90s in the dawning days of the Sci Fi Cha...

Re: Good Lord, it's the 20-year anniversary of the DVD format

I remember the beginnings of DVD quite well. My brother was working at Ken Crane's big screen TV stores at the time, and he and his co-workers initially laughed at the picture and sound quality of the early DVDs when they would try to demo them on the big tube sets. They'd try running a laserdisc of...

Re: Oscars 2017 - Better Late Than Never Edition

It's a very good point. The same projects that used to be the mid-level movies are now the high line HBO and Netflix series. In some ways, that's not a bad thing, where you can have a full story told over multiple episodes rather than being crammed into a 2 hour structure that can't hold it. (I'm re...

Re: Oscars 2017 - Better Late Than Never Edition

I think we agree she was over the top. People will likely differ in their reactions to it. Oscar speeches and moments have been charged events throughout my life, including the infamous Sacheen Littlefeather bit and the Vanessa Redgrave bit, etc. but I don't think it's those moments that have caused...

Re: Oscars 2017 - Better Late Than Never Edition

A few thoughts. The reason they have two envelopes for every award is not as a backup, as I understand it. The idea is that one sealed envelope is normally given to the presenters and the other one is given to the recipient afterward as part of their mementos in winning. It sounds like Emma Stone ju...

Re: Criterion - 50% Off Flash Sale

I've jumped on this to get caught up. Last year, the sale didn't come until September. I'm learning with Criterion and Barnes & Noble to wait for these sales. I used to make these purchases monthly - they've trained me to just compile a list of what interests me and eventually there will be a sa...
