Re: rate the last movie you saw

Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith (8/10) Not so much a review (we've all seen it numerous times) so much as some musings. Hayden Christensen is considerably better in this film than in Attack of the Clones . This film is the best of the prequels, with a more cohesive and focused storyline. I think thi...

Interview with Airplane creators (video)

Found this very interesting interview with Airplane creators David & Jerry Zucker and Jim Abrams -- on Dennis Prager's Youtube page of all places.

Maestro -- Leonard Bernstein biopic

I've been jaded about new movies for years, but based on the trailer, I have to say this looks very promising. I might even be excited about it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJP2QblqLA0 And when you compare this footage of the actual Leonard Bernstein to the trailer above, it’s uncanny how well B...

Re: Ridley Scott's Napoleon - November 22nd (Theaters Before Apple+) - Trailer

^^ Ouch! IndieWhire's review is equally uncharitable, and makes reference to "...Martin Phipps’ free-reed score, which Scott often ditches in favor of repurposing the music that Dario Marianelli wrote for Joe Wright’s “Pride & Prejudice”. https://www.indiewire.com/criticism/movies/napoleon-...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

But so obsessed was Lucas on this point that he felt compelled to tinker further with ESB and swap out the original voice of Boba (actor Jason Wingreen from the classic Trek episode "The Empath" and several TZ episodes) with the Jango Fett actor which is another example of his lame tinker...

Star Wars: Attack of the Clones (6.5/10) I'll start by saying this there are some good things in this movie. The effects are excellent, and more "crisp"-looking than those of The Phantom Menace . The fight between Yoda and Count Dooku is among the best moments in the entire Star Wars saga...

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (7/10) On a whim I pulled this one off the shelf tonight for another viewing (my first since 2016). I have to say this movie isn't standing the test of time. In the past I found The Phantom Menace enjoyable, exciting and appreciably sincere. I certainly thought it had ...

Dracula (1979) -- German Blu-ray (8.5/10) This is still the greatest adaptation of Bram Stoker's book -- and certainly the most uptown, with some of the all-time most talented people in cinema on hand to contribute. Frank Langella's remains the best and most believable interpretation of the Count D...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

Shutter Island (3/10) SPOILERS!!! Leonardo DeCaprio plays a federal marshal investigating the escape of an inmate from a maximum-security insane asylum (which is located on a supposedly inescapable island). The body of the film is a very well-acted, and often-suspenseful thriller. But the ending ru...

Re: Halloween Horror Marathon 2023

The only disappointment of The Blob is Dov Hoenig's chintzy electronic score, which does the movie no favors. The filmmakers obviously blew most of the budget on the creature F/X, and there was little left over to hire the services of an orchestra Michael Hoenig actually. (Dov Hoenig is an editor.)...

Re: Halloween Horror Marathon 2023

^^ Strong agreement on The (1988) Blob , which is by far the best of the three incarnations (the less said of Beware The Blob the better!). I liked how the filmmakers made the monster a government experiment gone wrong, as opposed to an unexplained “weird thing from outer space”. I also appreciated ...

Re: Halloween Horror Marathon 2023

Polanski's film remains one of the great psychological pressure-cooker thrillers of all time, showing the audience almost nothing while keeping the gradually increasing tension percolating nicely. Farrow is the key to it all working, selling Rosemary's gradual descent into anxiety-laden mistrust, c...
