Re: rate the last movie you saw

Saw four films the previous weekend... MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE-ROGUE NATION: 7.5/10 Pretty damn good entry in the Tom Cruise spy series-not quite as good as GHOST PROTOCOL but damn close, with Simon Pegg given a bit more to do in this entry (sadly, Ving Rhames is given less to do) and a pretty good femm...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

Thank you, Eric, for the correction on Cady-those Paul Henning shows all kind of run together for me after a while (I recall some crossover shows towards the end of their runs) although I do still enjoy GREEN ACRES somewhat surreal touches. Many people here know my political viewpoints, and even I r...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

Over the past few weeks I have watched a bunch of stuff and instead of long reviews thought I would just do some capsule ones: INDEPENDENCE DAY: 7/10 A film I still enjoy because it never tries to be more than it should, the effects work is still impressive as is David Arnold's score and I still get...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

I remember going with friends to see it expecting another teen sex comedy (the sex scene with the girl who kept saying that she "didn't care" was jaw dropping) and at the end we were both shocked at how it ended and my friends were quite peeved at the way she ended up treating the main cha...

Re: James Horner - Appreciation Thread

Considering that after the budget (of which there was nothing finalized) of TMP went nutso and Paramount pretty much had II under somewhat tighter reins with Harve Bennett and considerably less money, I wonder if Horner might have been signed for just II with an option for III if II did well enough....

Re: James Horner - Appreciation Thread

The latest issue of Entertainment Weekly has two tributes to Horner-one, a nice piece by James Cameron about working with the composer (although he kind of glosses over the falling out they had in the wake of ALIENS) the "Bullseye" at the end has his work in the center with images from AN ...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

As far as TITANIC is concerned, there are still parts of the score and the album that I do enjoy ("Southampton," the music during the sketching scene, the underscore after the song with the end credits, "Hymn to the Sea" on the album), and while parts using synth really stand out...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

JAWS: 10/10 Still one of the best thrillers of the last 50 years and Spielberg's directorial assurance is so strong that it is hard to believe that this was only his second theatrical feature. Had the honor of seeing this at TCM's presentation at a theater in Kalamazoo, MI last evening (this was my ...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

One correction to your review of SATAN MET A LADY, Andy-this was the second adaptation of Hammett's book. There was a version from 1931 (available only in the deluxe DVD set from WHV-not in the Blu-Ray, sadly) starring Ricardo Cortez and Bebe Daniels that is quite a good version and even more adult ...

Re: Twilight Time - New Low Quantity Alerts

For Don Cheadle's breakthrough performance as Washington's not-too-stable but loyal friend, this film is worth seeing and owning.

SILVERADO: 7/10 Back in the early summer of 1985, a good friend who was a film booker for the (now-defunct) Plitt Theater chain came from an exhibitor’s screening of this film full of excitement…”opening scene with great shootout and the sound of a rifle whooshing through the air and heroic music an...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

UNBROKEN: 7.5/10 Really well done historical/war epic by Angelina Jolie, adapted from Laura Hillenbrand's huge bestseller about Louis Zamporini, who ran in the 1936 Olympics, survived for over 40 days in an open raft after his plane crash landed into the Pacific and then managed to live through the ...
