Re: rate the last movie you saw

Have loved THE GREAT RACE ever since I saw it when I was a kid-have owned the laserdisc and the DVD but the Blu-Ray is breathtaking (as is Natalie Wood). The colors are the best I have seen in years and as Eric said, you can actually read the credits clearly this time. This is actually my favorite p...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

This also looks like one of the few movies where Harrison Ford actually seems to be enjoying himself onscreen-ever since SABRINA he always looks like he is really peeved about something, although I thought his turn in "42" was actually quite good and he was probably glad to have some make-...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

SHOW BOAT (1936) 9.5/10 One of my top 5 musicals of all time, I recently picked this up during a WAC "buy 2, get 1 free" sale (along with WHY BE GOOD? on DVD and THE GREAT RACE on Blu-Ray) and am extremely pleased with what they did with it. Of course, being a Warner Archive disc there rea...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

How does IMITATION GAME compare to ENIGMA, which came out in 2001 and had a lot of the same plot?

Re: rate the last movie you saw

Del Toro was involved in a ton of pre-production as early as 2008 and even moved his family down to NZ for the production around that time. According to press reports, it was the constant delays and funding problems (this was when MGM was having all of its financial problems and they were one of the...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

I get the feeling that the only way Jackson could justify the budget he felt he needed to tell the story required him to make this into two films (his original plan), then three. I wonder if that is where he and Del Toro differed and then the latter walked away from it. When a movie adaptation of a ...

On a lighter note.... BIG HERO SIX: 8/10 A big, sweet movie with a big, sweet hero-Baymax, an inflatable robot who is designed as a medical robot to diagnose and treat the sick. He is designed by Tadashi, a brilliant young man who is the older brother of Hiro, another highly intelligent kid who is a...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

ST. VINCENT 8/10 While not very original in the story department, ST.VINCENT is worth seeing for a number of reasons, #1 being a performance by Bill Murray that bests even his work in LOST IN TRANSLATION and is easily his best work since GROUNDHOG DAY. Why? Because he is playing a character that is ...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

My first Bond film in a theater tops all of you-saw YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE at a small neighborhood theater in Defiance, Ohio in the summer of 1967 (when I was nine) with my father. We were on a camping trip around the state-it was our first night and I think my dad did not feel like turning in for the ...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

In answer to Sprocket, the last marketable theme was Horner's from TITANIC, which is still the top-selling orchestral score to a film that I know of.

Re: rate the last movie you saw

If for no other reason than eliminating those "know what I mean-nudge-nudge" "witty" wise cracks, I am so glad the Bond films have taken a different tack with Daniel Craig in the role. Those are what turned me off the Moores after a while and really made me start disliking the Br...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

Brosnan uttering "I thought Christmas only came once a year" nearly made me throw my popcorn box at the screen when I saw it, and I would love to ask him if he ever winced at the thought of saying it out loud. :P

Re: rate the last movie you saw

Since the film was based on an Upton Sinclair novel ("Oil") I was not surprised about how the characters were drawn, although I was surprised that Anderson did not try to give them more shading onscreen. Day-Lewis mentioned in interviews that he modeled the character's speech patterns on H...

Got a couple of Blu-Rays (one for $1 and one for free-TG): 42-7/10 Nicely made film about Jackie Robinson's breaking the color barrier in baseball-smooth, craftsmanlike work from writer/director Brian Helgeland and solid performances by Chadwick Boseman as Robinson (doing a good job of playing a man...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

DRAFT DAY-7/10 Kevin Costner is one of those movie stars who, when he was hot, seemed ready to take some of that Jimmy Stewart likeability/comparison away from Tom Hanks, and whether in hindsight you feel that DANCES WITH WOLVES is now in the Academy of the Overrated and did not deserve its Oscars, ...
