Re: THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS - In Theaters & HBO Max

It took me two nights to watch The Matrix Resurrections with a viewing of Spider-Man: No Way Home sandwiched in-between. While not an ideal way to watch a movie, it made for an interesting contrast on the subject of fan service. The Marvel movie wholly embraced fan service. So did The Matrix but wit...

Re: Spielberg Remaking WEST SIDE STORY - Subtitles Are (Apparently) Racist!

I was talking to my wife about this controversy. She works for a non-profit organization in Dallas called Literacy Achieves that teaches ESL to students. She said a bit more than 50% of the group's students speak Spanish. These students are often desperate to learn English. Why? They want to read in...

Re: Spielberg Remaking WEST SIDE STORY - Subtitles Are (Apparently) Racist!

I'm certainly not a "wokeness" expert (although I did find the book Cynical Theories extremely helpful) but I believe the issue here is one of "power." The general idea behind CRT and all the other "theories" is that white males and Western civilization oppress minoriti...

Re: Spielberg Remaking WEST SIDE STORY - Subtitles Are (Apparently) Racist!

What are they planning for the overseas releases of the film? Include subtitles for only the dialogue spoken in English?

Excellent way to keep people out of the theater and wait to see the movie at home when they can turn on the subtitles.

Great news! I haven't seen this since the 80s when it was on HBO a lot. I liked it back then. Hope it holds up.

Re: Rate The Last TV Show Episode You Watched

Only Murders in the Building Excellent 10-episode series on Hulu stars Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez as residents of a fancy apartment building in New York City who discover a shared interest in true-crime podcasts. When an actual murder occurs in their building, they team up to solve...

Re: Disney's Latest Franchise Revival Bomb, HOME SWEET HOME ALONE - Trailer

My son decided to watch this last night, more as a sarcastic “this is going to be stupid” idea then any conviction that it would be good. I was in the other room listening to most of it and then actually watched the last twenty minutes. As you would expect, it’s not very good, a shameless rip-off of...

And entertaining reading as always regardless of the movie. 8) Thanks. This annual thread represents the majority of the creative writing I do about film in an average year. What I wouldn't give to be able to make a living at it, but if you don't have a YouTube channel, no one's going to listen to ...

Re: Halloween Horror Marathon 2021

MJ, hope you don't mind if I post a review/poem i wrote. The Raven 7.5/10 You know how people always complain when a movie doesn't resemble the book it's adapted from? I wonder what would happen if Edgar Allen Poe were to watch the 1963 version of The Raven... Once upon a midnight groovy as I sat to...

Loading up, some Halloween fare, others just things I was interested in... - Billy the Kid vs. Dracula (Blu-ray) * * Blind buy I think you'll like this one. Not quite one of the all time best "so bad it's good" movies but definitely has its moments, especially the final confrontation.

Re: NO TIME TO DIE [Bond 25] - October 8th

The topic of Bond's supposed aggression toward women has been the subject of conversation in a podcast I listen to in which one host was very disapproving of Bond's actions while the co-host thought it was more a character trait to be observed and not necessarily something that was meant to be endor...

Re: Filmmakers who vanished

Not a director who vanished but what happened to Andrew Niccol? I watched Gattaca last night and was really impressed. It's a solid directorial debut with terrific visuals and a story that seems even more relevant today. (Companies that make their workers take constant medical tests just to keep the...

Re: James Wan's MALIGNANT - September

I've been seeing a lot of reviews on Letterboxd trashing this, people saying it is excessively gory and poorly written but others liking it for those exact same reasons. Nearly every review mentions a twist in the third act that is completely bonkers. I assume MJ will watch it this weekend. Looking ...

I don't think he vanished but Savage Steve Holland made what, three theatrical features? Looks like he moved on to various sitcom projects over the years.
