Re: Halloween Horror Marathon 2023

An early effort from Aussie filmmaker Richard Franklin ( Road Games , Psycho II ), Patrick takes a gimmicky, apparently limited idea and wrings a good deal of suspenseful juice out of it, with Hitchcockian camerawork and effective performances giving the claustrophobic settings a sense of palpable ...

Re: Ridley Scott's Napoleon - November 22nd (Theaters Before Apple+) - Trailer

This does not instill confidence. Another fast moving Scott production rolling off the assembly line... You have to admire Scott's efficiency as a director -- but I find that movies that are quickly and efficiently made usually lack dramatic tension, and are generally not very immersive experiences...

Re: RIP Michael Gambon

Shame he'll only mainly be remembered as "The second Dumbledore". :? At least he will be remembered for something ! But I hear you. Gambon played a lot of far-more interesting and complex roles. I was always a big fan of his work -- he was incredible in The Singing Detective , wonderful i...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

Women Talking (3/10) You certainly can't accuse this film's title of false advertising. Women Talking is precisely that -- an hour and forty minutes of actresses performing static dialog scenes. It also has all the earmarks of the Academy's current criteria for a Best Picture nominee: it is well-ac...

I haven't actually watched this film since the 90s. I think it's time to revisit it!

Re: rate the last movie you saw

Crazy Rich Asians (7.5/10) This is a sweet and appealing enough movie, but essentially a retelling of that old chestnut -- the prince who falls in love with the peasant girl and faces disinheritance from disapproving elders unless he gives her up. Transposing it to modern-day Singapore does make fo...

I saw The Legend of Zorro, but I honestly can't remember much about it.

Re: Never Before Seen POLTERGEIST Deleted Scene Surfaces

Interesting, but I can see why it was left out. It's a bit too much of a tangent.

Also, Dr. Lesh says "there is nothing on the tape" yet in the earlier staircase scene, the playback on the video monitors clearly display spirits.

Re: Terrence Malick shoots 3,000 hours of film(!) for new movie

Did anyone ever hear that interview Daniel Schweiger did with James Horner about 15 years ago? Horner was extremely unfiltered in that interview when discussing Malick, who he basically thought was nuts. Horner regarded the cut of The New World he was given to score as randomly paced, and essentiall...

Fortunately, being a Terrence Malick film, the final cut will only be 2000 hours long.

Re: Sneakers coming on 4K UHD from Kino

Never liked it. Sorry! Wasn't crazy about Horner's score either. But I'll give it another watch when it rolls in. I thought it was entertaining. Yeah, it's preachy in that "naive lefty" way, but I found it clever and likeable. I thought Horner's score worked well in the film. Though amusi...

Re: Hollywood Self-Implosion with Actors Going On Strike

Either way, I definitely wouldn't want to be a theater owner. This could well be the final nail in the coffin to a deflated marketplace that hasn't recovered from covid. No stars are going to premieres? Well, soon nobody will be going to the movies, because there won't be any. And when you compare ...

Re: Hollywood Self-Implosion with Actors Going On Strike

I feel for the people on the bottom who don't make much, but I am not sure if it's really a battle about "pennies" the more I read about it. I have friends who are Hollywood writers, and I think they have a legitimate grievance when the average writer makes $69,510 a year, and Bob Iger is...

Re: Ridley Scott's Napoleon - November 22nd (Theaters Before Apple+) - Trailer

Minor quibble here...but couldn't Scott have found a French speaking actor to play Napoleon? Scott should have made this in 1992 with Gerard Depardieu (and Vangelis!) instead of 1492 . And I don't find the trailer very effective. Lots of impressive shots, but it gives me little sense of the tone of...
