That Peter Hyams is considered an auteur says all that need be said about this theory, to me. :? I am not saying Hyams' movies are necessarily great art, but the fact that he personally executes most of his films' key artistic tasks, gives him a degree of authorship that few others can claim (parti...

That's interesting, I have the exact opposite reaction--I find Braveheart derivative, overblown, repetitive, and campy. Gladiator I find just plain entertaining.

I've always thought of OZ as one of those movies that shows what the studio system could do when it used all of its resources--and usually in the service of a producer, not a director. OZ, GONE WITH THE WIND, BEN HUR, PLANET OF THE APES--these are all movies that (to use Kael's comment on Apes) lay ...

" I MUST see the opening "A CBS Special Presentation" intro animation (with music culled from Hawaii Five-O no less!)"

Is THAT what that drum-heavy piece with brass is from? Wow, I never knew that.

I'm glad all of this material is available for the real fans. I definitely LIKE this movie and have a great emotional attachment due to its color and excellence, but I was being sincere about the TV commercials and such--it's almost a post-modern art installation in that sense. While I think the per...

Route 66

I picked the first season of this up from the library and was curious if anyone here had seen the show, and could offer some thoughts.

I'll post some comments as I watch, but was wondering if there were any fans here.

Unlike Bond, Jones is such a cipher of a character that without Ford, there's no point. (I didn't see the last one, have no plans to, and haven't watched the others in 15 years.)

On the other hand I think it is fair to classify some writer-directors as "auteurs", like Peter Hyams, who writes the script, produces, directs and photographs his films. This is a misreading of the auteur theory, actually, though it's one everyone does. The auteur theory has been misinte...

I didn't mind the "invisible jetpack" moment in Mission Impossible, and while I didn't care for the movie much, I admired the attempt at something that was PLOTTED, and not just a series of action beats. This stuff is all fantasy--if there's anything I like less than Bruckheimerized action...

I've never seen this on video, and probably never will. As with Christmas specials and The Ten Commandements, I couldn't imagine watching it without TV commercials.

Dark Star seemed as much Dan O'Bannon's as Carpenter's. which could be why I like it and have no use for most of Carpenter's output. His stuff seems very boxed-in and airless to me, with cardboard characters and nothing interesting going on under the bland surfaces. He's one of those directors who, ...

Of course a director has influence on a movie, I never argued otherwise, but the point is, a movie is so complicated, that, for example, when a costume designer asks "Which of these designs based on our discussion do you like, 1,2 or 3?" that's a matter of guidance. How many times have we ...

Another example of how this franchise doesn't progress: That's a key word that the owners of these franchises rarely think about--PROGRESS. Of course sequels are about making money, but how about making the series' develop, so when people hear that another installment is on the way, they're intrigu...
