The whole idea that killing Newt and Hicks is a "slap in the face of the fans" is ludicrous, like saying Shakespeare killing Falstaff was an insult to those who loved the character (and he was loved enough to make more than one appearance in Shakespeare's works). It actually speaks to the ...

When you look at The Duellists, Alien, Blade Runner and then look at The Hunger and Top Gun, it looks like Tony has been more influential on Ridley, instead of vice-versa--in the 80's, who would have thought THAT would happen?

ADVENTURES OF BUCKAROO BANZAI B-/C+

Why introduce so many secondary characters and not flesh any of them out? Kind of wacky, but I notice the "cult" for this movie never really developed. Gets the grade I gave it because John Lithgow is funny and I like the alien ship design.

The Orphanage D+

Cliches get the thumbs up from Ebert and others if they're produced by Del Toro, I guess. I liked the MILFy heroine, but this was lame.

Yeah, if he's a replicant, the whole point of the movie is basically "Replicants are inhuman, but a replicant can learn to be human by seeing a replicant act like a human." I mean, it's a NEAT idea, if you don't mind tossing a whole movie away in order to have one moment of "Holy cow!...

Yeah, I read about that original ending, which I think is just one too-clever move too many, kind of like Dekkard being a replicant in Blade Runner--it's like "OK, you got me," but it's unsatisfying from a story point of view. You can imagine the movie makers thinking "And everyone'll...

SPIRIT OF THE DEAD C-/(no rating)/A Mixed anthology film (are there any other kind?) of Poe stories directed by Roger Vadim, Louis Malle and Federico Fellini that deserves more viewers for the third segment. Fellini's truly mad third segment stars Terrence Stamp as a drunken actor who sees a smiling...

As you know, action movies these days make half their money or more overseas because they speak in the universal language of "Bay" so I wouldn't fret. Many people have written/said Connor isn't as big a part in this, and it kind of reminds me of the Alien 3 scripts that either had no Riple...

I didn't know BED-SITTING ROOM was available. I saw it just once on Channel 56 years ago, and some of the imagery left a definite mark. I've had good luck rewatching movies I feared I wouldn't like after so many years--Let's Scare Jessica to Death and The Shuttered Room still worked for me 20+ years...

I think they should end the series with Connor's knowledge of how he came to be leading to the destruction of the Terminators by a seemingly significant action that results in his blinking out of existence. At first everyone thinks he's been blown up, but the last scene shows that within months, the...

I have to laugh whenever I read about Alien 3 only being liked because of the "Fincher cult"--I loved it from the first time I saw it, and went into the theater thinking "Who's this Fincher nobody?" I've also disliked most of what he's made since. What's really amusing is how som...

I'm actually looking forward to Terminator 4. I find I can enjoy movies like this while many others who also like SF and action don't because I don't read up too much about them, and don't expect them to be art. At the same time, this doesn't mean I like some of the utter garbage out there which has...

Le feu follet/The Fire Within - A Louis Malle-directed movie about an aging playboy who, though married, still sleeps around, and is known for his hijinks and drunken antics--he won't grow up. He decides to kill himself, and spends a day walking around Paris reflecting on his life. Sorry to beat a d...

While I agree there are movies, and motion pictures, and films, and one shouldn't go to one expecting another, it really is kind of pathetic how certain folks will accept anything because it's "dumb fun" or whatever. These same people would dismiss the exact same movies if their effects we...
