Re: Fox/Disney Deal Due as Comcast Drops Out

We'll have to see how Disney manages this. I again do not see a scenario where Disney closes the Fox lot, sells the real estate and tells Ryan Murphy, Seth MacFarlane and their profitable shows to jump in the lake, among other things. There's simply too much money to be made, and Fox is already raki...

Re: GLASS - Shyamalan's UNBREAKABLE/SPLIT Sequel - Trailer

I will need to see SPLIT later this year. I was divided about it, as it seemed like a strange horror movie to me. The one Shyamalan movie I've indisputably enjoyed is SIXTH SENSE. That one continues to work for me. UNBREAKABLE is a terrific movie to me for its first 90 mins or so - and then in the f...

Re: James Gunn Axed From GUARDIANS Franchise After Gross Twitter Comments Surface

Frankly, I have seen plenty of evidence of how politics (and other things) have made some people quite deranged. I take no pleasure in seeing someone get fired, nor do I take pleasure in seeing someone try to get away with vicious behavior. On any set where I've worked, people who act in this manner...

Re: Fox/Disney Deal Due as Comcast Drops Out

This is being publicized as a loss for Comcast (although they're still chasing after SKY), but I would argue that they succeeded in their goal here: they forced Disney to pay a higher price for something they could have gotten for less had Comcast not bid the situation up. The question now will be w...

Re: WB Archive Collection - Supergirl Blu-ray

Andy, that's what I was thinking. Thanks for the reminder about the TV version - that sounds very familiar and very correct. I remember something similar about the longer Halloween cut too - but I don't remember if they kept things bleeped out. I get very confused on that one - I think Criterion inc...

Re: WB Archive Collection - Supergirl Blu-ray

This sounds like WB just retrieved the materials that were prepared by Anchor Bay for their 2-disc DVD edition of Supergirl. I picked that one up when it became available and still have it in my collection for the bonus materials.

Criterion 50%-Off Summer Sale at Barnes & Noble Through August 6

I just got the email from Criterion. Barnes & Noble is doing its annual summer sale of Criterion DVDs and Blu-rays. 50% off all titles in store and online through August 6. This is why I make lists of my picks of the Criterion upcoming releases and then wait out in the weeds for the sale announc...

Re: TUCKER - THE MAN AND HIS DREAM Blu-Ray in August

Tucker has always been an interesting film to me for many reasons. One big one is that it marked the re-ascendance of Martin Landau as a character actor. He finally started to get major recognition again with his part here, which got him nominated for an Academy Award and earned him a Golden Globe. ...

Is there any truth to the rumor that if you buy The Other Side of Midnight, you'll get a copy of the original cut of Star Wars?

Re: STAR WARS Spinoffs "On Pause" after SOLO Crashes

I strongly believe they'll go slow with any further trilogy plans until they can really come up with a better plan.

The Star Wars movies are not like the Marvel comics franchise - there's not that much story to tell, and they need to be careful about how they tell it.

Re: Fox For Sale - Disney and (Maybe) Comcast Jockeying For Position

I understand that Disney just upped their offer to try to outbid Comcast. I'll be curious to see if and when Comcast matches the new bid. There's a great line from an old (and bad) episode of Miami Vice from the 1980s, where Crockett and Tubbs butt into an auction where the bad guy is bidding on som...

Re: Twilight Time 7 for $70 Package Sale

The only item on this list I would have wanted is Absolute Beginners, and I picked that up on sale sometime a couple of years ago, I think.

Standing by to hear about the next Criterion flash sale at their site or Barnes & Noble, which I'm figuring will either come in September or November.

Re: How the Death Star battle was saved through editing

The Marvel Star Wars comic actually had a bunch of good stories that it told in its day. Some were silly, but some were actually better than just the "filler story while we wait for the next movie" ideas you'd expect. Between Empire and Jedi, there was a run for about a year where David Mi...

Re: Weekend Box Office - SOLO No-Go

The articles I've read indicate that SOLO will indeed be in Into Darkness territory - it won't break even until it hits home video - and even there it may take some time. I expect they'll issue multiple "exclusive" editions just like was done with Into Darkness to try to push up the number...

Re: Siskel & Ebert debate Star Wars with John Simon

As a fan of the old days of Sneak Previews and a time before Siskel and Ebert were household names, I remember enjoying the reviews of Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel. But I also remember that serious movie critics from the 70s and 80s did not. They were greatly offended that their analysis was to be re...
