Loved him on "Secret Agent/Danger Man" and, most especially, as Dr. Syn in "The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh."

I think '08 may be the first year I didn't set foot in a movie theater once. There's a couple of end-of year releases I'm interested in (Frost/Nixon, Milk, Valkyrie) but two of them probably won't show up down here, and the third has, I think, already played. So, I'll wait for the DVDs. As for a mov...

It is a flawed film (Burton chews the scenary but Jay Robinson inhales it whole) This may be the most hilariously accurate description of Jay Robinson's performance I have ever read. It has to be seen to be believed, and is immensely entertaining for all the wrong reasons. That said, I do enjoy thi...

9/10
Wellman's "Wild Boys of the Road" (1933). Bleak, Pre-Code look at young people taking to the rails during the depression is still a startling, compact and involving tale; the ending, unfortunately, feels "tacked on." I like Frankie Darro's performance in this very much.

I can always get a laugh out of my younger brother by imitating my father's way of watching a baseball game. It was like a Sam Kinison performance, full of "What the **** are you doing you ***** *******?!" and "You **** birdbrain!" (I've always found the term "birdbrain&quo...

I've never seen an episode of this show, but my nephew came stomping down the stairs the other night after watching the finale, pissed off about how it had ended. :( My curiosity rises... 8) From what I've seen, just going with the consensus, the majority of fans I've read seemed to have been quite...

I bought the "Dr. Syn" set, too. Nice to have my favorite Disney production on DVD. The restoration is beautiful. :D

I felt the same way when I unearthed his interview with Alice Faye at the tail end of a tape I was going to re-use. I've since made a couple of back- up copies of this, as Ms. Faye remains one of my favorite stars from the 1930s. I also had some random episodes of "The Lot," but eventually...

"Finding Rin-Tin-Tin" (Edwards -- I love this one!) "One Man Jury" (Stevens) "Danger Man" (Astley) "Morituri" (Goldsmith) I have the new-issue "Omega Man" on the list for next order. Latest DVD: "Mister Roberts," 1984 TV production with Kev...

I saw "Twentieth Centry" at The Brattle Theater in Cambridge (Mass.) a number of years ago. The audience literally howled with laugther, to the point where a couple of times you couldn't hear what was being said onscreen but it almost didn't matter. Much of it had to do with what you menti...

One holiday-oriented movie that I've pulled out at various times of the year is "Remember the Night." It has always baffled me that this film is not better known to the general public. The work done by Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray is exemplary, and it's a good story, too. (I don't w...

Hey, John! Check out the 1946 version of "The Spiral Staircase," if you haven't already seen it. Not a horror movie per se, but masterful at creating mood. Great Dorothy McGuire performance, too. Also - you mentioned you were watching westerns a while back. I finally got a chance to re-wat...

Discovering "Blast of Silence"

I got this as part of the recent Criterion Buy One/Get One at DeepDiscount, as one of the "Get Ones." Compact, independently-produced noir with location filming in NYC, circa early 1960s. There's a very informative "Making Of" documentary included, too. The Brattle Theater in Cam...
