As I wrote before, I'm also skeptical of this film's story. Cameron's description really did make it sound as quaint as ALIENS meets DANCES WITH WOLVES -- this tale of an indigenous people being attacked by more technologically advanced weaponry and "the choice" a crippled marine has to m...

Why not? They seem to make films about the IRA/Sinn Fein. They do? I can think of three, none very recent. More to the point, that's not the kind of terrorism we're talking about in terms of American movies. But then, I think True Lies was kinda silly and pointless and could have used a butcher on ...

The stuff they've shown for this movie, like those drawings up thread, looks like any video game. Not excited at all.

A true rarity--I'm more interested in Horner's score than the big sci-fi movie it's written to accompany. Horner's latest scores have really renewed my decades-dead interest in him.

I think ANGELS & DEMONS is the only summer movie for the older crowd. Whatever *I* think of it, which ain't much, the whole Dan Brown thing appeals to middlebrow audiences who just don't care about fantasy stuff (though of course it's as much fantasy material as anything, but you know what I mea...

Andy, I agree with every word you wrote. The thing about Shatner vs. Stewart is the difference between star power/charisma and acting. It's a little like comparing a more literary writer with Stephen King--I won't argue that King (back when I enjoyed him) was a GREAT writer, but I own more books by ...

I didn't much care for LEMONY SNICKET beyond its look -- it had top-notch production values across the board (and half of Burton's art directors along for the ride), but I found the film soulless and redundant. "Soulless and redundant"--PERFECT description of that. I saw it with two femal...

As I said before, for the TNG fans, or people who weren't so much into the old show, I can understand how they'd find it "silly". But this is more what STAR TREK is to me, than any of the franchise's later entries or shows. IMO, Abrams "got it," and I also agree most of the peop...

What this movie indicated to me was that the worst things for Star Trek since the 70's have been Gene Roddenberry and the fans. I've been a Trek fan for close to 30 years. I guess this statement has to include me. At face value, from my perspective as a fan of that length of time, your statement is...

I finally saw this, and it was outstanding. I got the feeling that Abrams is a Star Trek fan the way *I* am--loved the original show as a kid, but i grew up and the movies and TV shows grew in a very different way. In retrospect, STTMP (from the hiring of Serious Oscar-winning Director Wise to the l...

My friend who works in computer animation wants me to come see Trek with him sometime this week. He saw it and enjoyed it, though he wasn't as crazy over it as some. He loves Star Trek. He said McCoy was "spot on" and he liked Kirk, but had problems with the story and some of the logic. He...

(it's ironic how those who trash Cameron can't see that any of the emotional aspects of ALIEN3 in terms of Ripley having lost her comrades is entirely due to the fact that ALIENS -- not ALIEN, not ALIEN3 -- developed those themes. There's nothing that ALIEN3 does that's interesting on its own other...

The thing about Young, to me, is that working in so many horror movies has really helped his non-horror stuff be less sappy than it would be. His BRIGHT ANGEL score is a real low-key gem I never tire of listening to--I bet it's one of my most-played CDs. Some of his CDs I don't listen to at all--the...

Is the score on CD? I have almost all of Young's scores, and even though he's written so many horror scores and some of them start to sound the same, he's an always-buy with me. I always find something worthwhile on his CDs. I have to transfer the rest of my Young vinyl. I did HAUNTED SUMMER yesterd...

I haven't been paying attention to the publicity on this much, but what's interesting is that there seems to be a lot of UNFORCED enthusiasm for this. I've read so many tortured "No, no, it was good, a very entertaining popcorn flick" responses to movies lately, and this has the vibe of pe...
