For the past three days, since Episode IV was recently on TV here in Hong Kong, I've had friends calling to ask whatever happened to Obi-Wan after Vader cut him down in the Death Star duel? Did he die? Oh God, when I was 14 years old, it was obvious what was going on...! What's wrong with these peo...

SPOILERS AS WELL... Harry, Valid points and thanks for your post! Here are some of my thoughts, because I've been reading some of the same things... Some fans commented that the still-smoking Jedi Temple shot was reminiscent of the WTC on 9/11, and I also thought that when Grievous' starship enters ...

Just to follow up: Warner is confirmed to doing both versions of the movie. Here's their official press release with news of the movie's new cut -- which sounds like it's a MAJOR overhaul, re-editing the entire film, not merely adding new scenes and trimming some others. ----------------------------...

CHARLIE & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY -- What The HELL??!?!

I'm a Tim Burton fan, but just what the heck is up with his CHARLIE & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY? The trailer looks absolutely horrid. Johnny Depp looks fiendishly fey and more like Michael Jackson than Gene Wilder. The "new wave" kind of look and music video styling looks really odd for Bu...

Incidentally the box-office grosses are in: $50 MIL. on Thursday, setting the all-time single day record (of any kind!). This movie is going to make a fortune. People will go back -- unlike Episode II and more than I as well. I should also mention that, while I thought the movie was great but had so...

Paul, This is sad news indeed. I think KINGDOM OF HEAVEN said it all -- all-cliche city, though at least the movie supplemented it with enough temp-track music apparently to make it less noticeable. You know how we look back on movies of the '70s and early '80s with their pop tunes and synth soundtr...

Comingsoon.net just posted the Midnight box-office numbers: $16-$17 MILLION alone from the first group of shows! At one local theater which my fiancee went to, the place was packed like it was a Friday night at 7pm....every show was sold out. I didn't get this kind of enthusiasm from audiences, not ...

Eric that's a fair point. But I was down on CLONES from the moment it came out -- and you're right it didn't get any better on repeat viewing....I read my original review for the first time in a while and I do think it's even worse than I originally wrote. PHANTOM MENACE I admit to enjoying and I st...

Actually, I found the organization of the subjects in a chronological fashion without any intrusive narration to be quite effective. Kind of like having access to the raw materials of history at their best. And truth be told, I'd rather hear more from those who made the film then to hear some fan s...

Sounds interesting, though I would never describe the full-length documentary from the LD as dry. Don't get me wrong Eric, I love it, but I find there's a few too many "talking heads" with little to break it up. From what they're doing with this (Martha's Vineyard location work, interview...

STAR WARS: EPISODE III Official Review Thread

Just got back (from the final pre-release screening at 7pm) and am working on my review. It's awesome. A grand, old-fashioned, rollicking matinee. Perfect? Probably not. But who ever said STAR WARS was perfect? There's not a scene in the wrong place, not a wrong note struck. Ewan MacGregor absolutel...

THE SHARK IS STILL WORKING: A New JAWS Documentary

This ISN'T on the 30th Anniversary DVD, believe it or not....but is a fresh, new documentary on the Making of JAWS, complete with Spielberg and Williams (and other crew members) interviews as well. Details here (including a production blog): http://www.sharkisstillworking.com/ There have now been nu...

Eric,
I noticed DeepDiscountDVD has some of those titles for $11.99 shipped.

If you can wait until the summer-time 20% off sale you can snag them for under $10...I may do just that!

Eric, sorry I didn't reply to his but I was on vacation at the time. I'm a big Godzilla fan and this is fantastic news. I bought a group of "Video Daikaju" VHS tapes a few years back that were subtitled and transcribed off the Japanese LDs (KING KONG VS GODZILLA, WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS, etc...

DARK CRYSTAL 2 -- A Reality!

...and it sounds like the Henson Company is really banking on it as well, with an animated TV series to follow. I hope it somehow comes close to approximating the original film...and hey, at least it's NOT a remake with CGI characters! Will be interesting to see who releases it as well. Odyssey is t...
