Hey, my birthday! I may check this out.
I do have the single disk DVD that includes Murders in the Rue Morgue but depending on the price...

(The cover art does seem pretty underwhelming)

Re: Holiday viewing

It Happened on Fifth Avenue (1947) 3/5 My final viewing for the season, this vaguely Capra-esque effort puts a kindly tramp in the seasonally vacant mansion of a rich man and from there he collects a few down-and-out ex-soldiers trying to find work. Perhaps a bit long-winded but Gale Storm is a rea...

The Blue Carbuncle (1984) - Jeremy Brett The Blue Carbuncle (1968) - Peter Cushing The Granada production is routinely watched in our house at Christmas time and, in common with most of this Adventures of Sherlock Holmes series, is a superior entertainment, well adapted and performed (unless you ha...

Re: Holiday viewing

The Cheaters (1945) 2/5 I hesitate to post this one, probably no one here has heard of it and it really isn't that good, a B-movie My Man Godfrey knockoff. Joseph Schildkraut, best known as a character actor, stars with Billie Burke and Eugene Pallette, no big stars here. A down on his luck actor i...

Donovan's Reef (1963) 4/5

Don't recall when I first saw this, many years ago, but this has always been a favorite, movie equivalent of comfort food. More free-wheeling than profound, hitting the right (expected) notes, and being a big John Wayne fan doesn't hurt.

Deagle-Deagle-Deagle…! - Gremlins (1984): 8/10 http://media.giphy.com/media/l2YWDVBDEhAAJSeQg/giphy.gif For those who like their Holiday movies plucked from the "naughty" list. :P Haven't watched Gremlins since it was in theaters. You must have the year wrong, it could not have been that ...

Holiday viewing

Since Halloween season horror viewing seems to be an annual tradition around here, as I began to watch a few movies where Christmas played some part, I wondered if documenting such viewing had ever been of interest to forum visitors. If nothing else, consider this a reminder that White Christmas is ...

Re: Halloween Horror Marathon 2018

The conclusion to my seasonal viewing, the "Halloween" episode of The Andy Griffith Show ... The Haunted House (1963) A favorite episode of my favorite TV series. Andy, Barney, and Gomer investigate a "haunted" house. This has all the expected trappings, ghostly moans, spirit rap...

Re: Halloween Horror Marathon 2018

Theater of Blood (1972) 3/5 I am a fan of Vincent Price's sometimes campy 1960s horrors and this is among the better ones with it's similarities to the (superior) The Abominable Dr. Phibes . However, the plot runs the risk of becoming slightly tedious when, after the first few victims, most of the ...

Re: Halloween Horror Marathon 2018

I decided to start my serious Halloween season viewing with a few Dracula movies I hadn't seen within memory... Dracula (1979) 2/5 I thought this would be my first viewing but after watching it I believe that I may have seen it before (or maybe it was just the familiar story elements?) Langella made...

Re: Halloween Horror Marathon 2018

Two final horror shorts, Transylvania 6-5000 (1963) Among the last of the Merrie Melodies but still very clever as Bugs matches wits with vampire, Count Bloodcount. Bewitched Bunny (1953) A version of the Hansel and Gretel tale has the children lured into Witch Hazel's home for roasting. Of course t...

Re: Halloween Horror Marathon 2018

More animated "horrors"... Claws for Alarm (1953) Basically a remake of Scaredy Cat but this time the "haunting" is not so obviously mice. Porky and Sylvester check into a haunted looking hotel at their peril. This version ending with Sylvester and Porky making a hasty retreat in...

Re: Halloween Horror Marathon 2018

This time a pair of Looney Tunes,
Broom-Stick Bunny (1956)
Trick-or-treating Bugs, in the guise of a witch, visits Witch Hazel; very funny with surreal backgrounds.

Hyde and Hare (1955)
Bugs meets Dr. Jekyll. A one-joke short but these never out-stay their welcome.

Re: Halloween Horror Marathon 2018

OK, close enough to the 31st to dip my toe into "Halloween" viewing. Start with a brace of Merrie Melodies ... Scaredy Cat (1948) Sylvester (paired with Porky) encounter a house "haunted" by mice, until Sylvester develops a backbone... Hair-Raising Hare (1946) Bugs is lured by Pe...
