Re: rate the last movie you saw

Poongsan (2011) 7/10 A South Korean popcorn movie with a tragic heart, both in terms of the fate of its protagonists and as a wider commentary on the relationship between North and South Korea. An unnamed man risks his life running the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea, to pass messag...

Foreign and European Blu-rays

I thought this was an interesting list of English-friendly European blus not available in the UK, and many not available here, either. Germany 54 100 Feet 4 Brothers A Fistful of Dynamite A Good Year A Matter of Life and Death Abandoned The About Schmidt Age of Innocence Ali (original theatrical cut...

KimchiDVD and NOVAmedia sales (South Korea)

I've noticed a couple of interesting sales on Korean produced blu-rays. https://kimchidvd.com/en/good/good_event.jsp?lidx=70 I picked up Attila Marcel ($16), One Week ($16), Sorum ($11) and Shunji Iwai’s Blu-ray Collection for $33, which includes Love Letter , April Story , and Hana & Alice - th...

Re: Twilight Time Sale - 75%, 50%, 25% Off (Starts 4pm 11/16)

After much thought, I've picked up 3 more of the cheapies, triggered by SWAMP WATER, which I'm sure will never be on blu again. BONJOUR TRISTESSE OLIVER! SWAMP WATER I am interested in some of the 50% off titles, including STRANGE INVADERS, HEAVEN KNOWS, MR. ALLISON, and BORN FREE but I have to wait...

Re: Twilight Time Sale - 75%, 50%, 25% Off (Starts 4pm 11/16)

I've always liked "First Men In The Moon." Yes it takes half of the film to get there but I think the pacing is done reasonably well, (Lionel Jeffries shouting "GIBBS!" can still crack me up). To me the biggest flaw is copping the ending of War Of The Worlds in reverse and makin...

Re: Twilight Time Sale - 75%, 50%, 25% Off (Starts 4pm 11/16)

To be honest as much as I admire Ray Harryhausen's work I find a few of those 50s/60s fantasies of his to be tedious sits. The first hour of FIRST MEN IN THE MOON is a rough ride in that regard; kind of a fuddy-duddy "Flying Machines" comedy before they take off for the moon. I can see pi...

Re: Twilight Time Sale - 75%, 50%, 25% Off (Starts 4pm 11/16)

Hard choices ... many classic films at really good prices. :) As soon as they dropped the prices (before 4:00PM) I made the following quick order, knowing that the title I really wanted FIRST MEN IN THE MOON was in short supply. THE SOUND AND THE FURY MAJOR DUNDEE JANE EYRE FIRST MEN IN THE MOON IN ...

Re: New STAR TREK Series - Trainwreck Incoming?

It always surprises me how 'ham-handed' these properties are handled.

Aren't there competent professionals out there to at least get the product out?

I'm not expecting any vision in these shows, but I am surprised at the total lack of direction. :?

Painfully obvious to me. :(

I was very disappointed; although the film looked great, it really didn't go anywhere.

Re: rate the last movie you saw

Short Circuit (1986) 7/10 This is one instance where a blatantly commercial product is greater than the sum of its parts due to the quality of the talent involved. By blatantly commercial, I mean containing multiple (and overt) opportunities for product placement and channeling an ET-like vibe. The ...

Re: This Week's Column: THE THING Strikes Again

Reading your THE THING review, I'm reminded that I never know what audio format to choose when I watch my blu-rays. I have a stereo system and usually choose the stereo 2.0 option when available, but I wonder if choosing the default (usually the 5.1 option) and letting my player down mix it would be...

Re: Gerry Anderson's UFO: The Complete Series Blu-ray

I've been happy with their releases, but unfortunately it is Region B.

I might wait until one of their (very good) sales to pick it up, however.

Re: Gerry Anderson's UFO: The Complete Series Blu-ray

Must buy for me, although region coding and price will be a factor.

Also nice to see it is 7 disks, equivalent to the Japanese release (the German set is only 6).

Is the seventh disk only extras?
