I've always found White Squall to be one of Ridley Scott's more underrated films, so nice to see it in high def for a low price. :)

Haven't seen the transfer (Mill Creek usually sends me stuff weeks after street date), but I mean, $6 for a title never even given a 16:9 DVD release in the US release -- even if it's a dated transfer, who cares! I agree it's one of Scott's better films. I liked that and GI JANE which he made back to back for Hollywood.

BTW my dad sailed with the Scott Wolf character, in real life, back in '60s. After a few days at sea he recounted what happened to the guys on the boat. Really terrifying, unusual phenomena and at least that element of the film was accurately portrayed.

I had no idea it ever happened until my mom and I went to see the film. At dinner with my dad that night, we were telling him the story of the film, and he's like, "I knew this kid Chuck Geig..." (sp). And I'm like, that's the main character of the film!!

That's really fascinating, Andy. I found the titular storm sequence in White Squall to be one of Scott's most visually kinetic/terrifying scenes, and coming from this particular filmmaker, that's saying a lot. I know a lot of people slagged the movie off when it was first released (a lot of "Dead Sailor's Society" comparisons), but it's gorgeous to look at, Jeff Bridges is terrific, and even the Zimmer Clone score isn't half-bad (although I'd love to hear what Maurice Jarre wrote for it). Just too bad it's not being released as a special edition, as Scott SEs are among the best in the market. Just a commentary by Scott would be edifying.

Yeah, I hear you, but these days we're lucky to see this on Blu Ray at all.

BTW GI JANE was at least a special edition laserdisc -- had a Scott commentary and the deleted opening -- but neither of those surfaced on the DVD that Buena Vista released. I'd doubt they'll ever re-materialize on a Blu Ray, if that ever happens.

I actually saw it selling on Amazon for under $7. I'd like to grab it, but with my luck, they'd announce an SE a few weeks later...

Something tells me there probably isn't going to be another release of this one...I'd go ahead and pick it up if you're motivated. $7 isn't bad even if its barebones.

Grabbed it for an even five dollars last night (it's back to $5.99 this morning), and threw in White Squall while I was at at. My Ridley Scott Blu collection is nearing completion, although I'm holding out on Kingdom Of Heaven in hopes that the excellent four-disc DVD set will be released on Blu at some point.

Terrific transfer in the Mill Creek Blu-Ray.

Here's some info on the real Chuck Gieg and the movie from the time of its original release --
