Re: "The Lincoln Conspiracy" Andy, and your comment, "I’m certainly not versed enough in the history to state whether or not its claims have any merit at all!"

I can assure you they don't. In fact they were discredited back in the late 70s and early 80s when a team of professional Civil War historians exposed the materials used by the producers of this film as an outright hoax (especially the so-called "missing diary pages" that allegedly incriminated Edwin Stanton). Regarding the "James Boyd" theory, there is documentation that shows that (1) the real Captain James W. Boyd was not a Booth lookalike (2) he died in early 1866 and (3) the real Booth did indeed die at Garret's Farm.

Most of what "The Lincoln Conspiracy" put forth was the culmination of decades of previous conspiracy theories that originated with a man named Otto Eisenschiml. He was one of the earliest to push the idea of the assassination being the product of Radical Republicans wh saw Lincoln as too charitable to the South. Exactly how they would then get Booth, whose fanaticism for the Confederacy was well-known, to do their bidding never made any sense (in short it's a 19th century version of the JFK conspiracy buff claim that fanatical communist Lee Harvey Oswald was really working for the US government or "Right wing elements"). "Lincoln Conspiracy" because it resorted to outright hoax materials that were exposed as such by Civil War scholars in major academic publications in the early 1980s, is largely credited with having buried what little following the "Eisenschiml thesis" still had in some quarters and today almost no one talks about it.

Thanks Eric, I appreciate the history. That would explain it as the real reason this "speculative history" hasn't been unearthed until now!
