If these are accurate then it means really bad news for THE ISLAND and the BAD NEWS BEARS remake. Looks like Bay's streak of $100 mil epics will be coming to a very quick end (it also means Ewan Macgregor and Scarlett Johannson aren't enough to open a movie, either).

When I first heard of Bay doing THE ISLAND, I thought it was a remake of the Peter Benchley flickCouldn't happen to a nicer guy.
And whenever I see those ads with Ewan McGregor, I keep on expecting him to say "But you were the frozen one!"
In hindsight maybe that would have resulted in a better movie (especially considering the Pirates of Caribbean success!).

There's an easy explanation: why would anyone want to see it? Seriously. I mean, you've got Ewan MacGregor -- last I checked he can't carry a movie. Scarlett Johannson is no box-office draw. Together, I think they vastly over-analyzed their "star" potential.
Plus the trailers -- like every Warner movie this summer -- were horrid. You had very little idea what the movie was about or anything else. That couldn't have helped either.
FANTASTIC FOUR beat both that AND the remake of the BAD NEWS BEARS -- in its third weekend, no less! (so much for bad worth of mouth, huh!).
Also amazing how well MR AND MRS SMITH has done -- easily the highest grosser for both Pitt and Jolie...should end up with $180 million domestic.

the trailer WERE bad, but instead of people not undertanding what it was about they showed the whole movie! maybe th eus trailers are different, but over here, ther eis no need to see th emovie anymore because th etrailer gave everything away.. the whole plot, all major plot points and twists and the ending!

While it's probably too much to hope that audiences have finally wised up to Bay's lack of talent, a friend who say it yesterday told me it was s filled with product placement - really, really obvious and repeated endorsements - that he felt that he should have been paid to see it

I'm not trying to defend Bay here, but...how is it ALL the director's fault?
If a movie stinks, wouldn't the first fault be with the actual CONTENT, like the story and script?
It's up to the director to take said material and shoot and visualize it in as compelling a manner as possible.
Now, if Bay came up with the story for The Island as well...fire away!
I liked The Rock and Bad Boys 1 well enough, for action films, and even Armageddon was a romp in the theater when I saw it with some friends.
But, just like it's probably fair to condemn Bay as the sole villian...I can't give Bay ALL the praise for the films that I liked, either. Movie making is a team effort.
I guess there really is some bitterness out there about Pearl Harbor. That's what I glean from reading some of the reactions in this thread.
As far as The Island goes...it just looks like a POS even in the trailers and from everything I've read. I very seriously doubt a different director could have done much more with it, since the script and story are a hackneyed nightmare to begin with.

I find it difficult to defend Bay. I really haven't cared for any of his films particularly though it's strange that I will defend PEARL HARBOR -- to a point. It's no great movie, I wouldn't even recommend it strongly, yet at the same time there are so many people who HATE it (pretty absurd when you consider how much money it raked in -- someone out there liked it) that I find myself defending it.

I've seen far worse films than Pearl Harbor. But alas...not to be. And I'm not convinced that's all Bay's fault, either, just based on my understandings of who does what to make a film happen.
How about Devil's Rejects? That thing looks like a snuff film outright. I've DEFINITELY been asking your question a lot, every time I see the trailer for THAT.
