Weekend Box Office 7/29: WEDDING, CHARLIE Hold Big Time

#1 Post by AndyDursin »

XXX might have made a fortune but I thought it was horrible. Looks like it's caught up with director Rob Cohen this time with STEALTH, which received unanimously poor reviews.

Obviously THE ISLAND is the flop of 2005, with BAD NEWS BEARS likewise doing poorly (though it didnt cost the fortune of Bay's bomb).

WEDDING CRASHERS should go to #1 in its THIRD weekend! (and good for it, it was actually funny).

FRIDAY estimates

WEDDING CRASHERS 6.0 101.8
CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY 5.2 136.7
STEALTH 5.0 5.0
SKY HIGH 4.8 4.8
MUST LOVE DOGS 4.4 4.4
FANTASTIC FOUR 1.9 129.2
ISLAND, THE 1.8 20.5
BAD NEWS BEARS 1.7 18.8
WAR OF THE WORLDS 1.5 214.3
HUSTLE & FLOW 1.2 11.7

It just goes from bad to worse with The Island - Universal are using the failure as leverage to buy out DreamWorks, who are expected to lose more than $50m on it. Bad News Bears will probably make its money back worldwide simply because it's not that expensive. Any idea how much Stealth actually cost?

STEALTH is supposedly VERY expensive. I don't have the exact figure but I've read in several places upwards of $100-$130 million. According to Boxofficemojo it's even more expensive than THE ISLAND (?). You're right on BAD NEWS BEARS, it only cost $35 million so it won't lose a whole lot.

Incidentally, STEALTH is actually in contention with THE ISLAND for the worst reviewed film of the year...and it just might beat it in that regard!

Here are the full weekend estimates. Despite all its bad reviews FANTASTIC FOUR has done very, very well (and continues to). MR AND MRS SMITH has also done great, it will finish over $180 million.

1 2 Wedding Crashers NL $20,475,000 $116,074,000 $40 3
2 1 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory WB $16,385,000 $148,096,000 3
3 N Sky High BV $14,590,000 1
4 N Stealth Sony $13,500,000 -1
5 N Must Love Dogs WB $13,050,000 1
6 3 Fantastic Four Fox $6,800,000 $136,145,000
7 4 The Island DW $5,600,000
8 6 War of the Worlds Par. $5,435,000 $218,332,000 5
9 5 Bad News Bears Par. $5,425,000 $22,457,000 2
10 10 March of the Penguins WIP $4,131,000 $16,431,000 - 6

The expensive, bad films just continue to roll out in spades. Amazing.

The thing I can't understand is just why so many of these films cost so much. $100m+ films should be the exception, not the rule. And how expensive can the people behind most of these movies actually be? Is Jessica Biel really that expensive? There was a time when something like Stealth would have been knocked out for $15m and The Island would have been considered pricey at $60m.

The studios have got to rein in on these kinds of costs. If you look at how much more controlled costs are even on big films in the rest of the world (even from countries without devalued currencies or tax breaks), these people really ought to be taking notes and learning lessons.

Still, on the plus side, the humiliation of Michael Bay continues - yeah!!! - and you just gotta love those penguins!

The best first guess would be: Cast salaries. Then how much are they relying on CGI to cover their ass in some of these films. Then start looking at other salaries beyond that.

Tom Cruise gets what? $20-25 million a picture, right off the bat? I think that salaries like that for any actor (or athlete) are simply beyond obscene.

Couldn't agree with you more.

Maybe it's like the insurance business: The costs go up because they know they can charge x amount of dollars and get away with it.

Having now seen the trailer for Stealth, I'm amazed it did that well.
