Gosh, The Dukes of Hazzard, one of the worst-looking films of the Summer (and this from a Smokey and the Bandit 1 fan!) took more in three days than The Island did in three weeks. I approve. Hell, even those loveable penguins took more this weekend than Michael Bay's schlockbuster. :D

I know it's not news that Michael Bay's had the big flop of the summer, but damn, I just love beng able to write those words. This one just never gets tired!

THE ISLAND has sunk!!! :)

And STEALTH isn't far behind...Rob Cohen lays an egg!!

DUKES is apparently godawful, but they did so much marketing -- relentlessly pandering to the MTV crowd -- that I'm not surprised it opened well. Still, I imagine a 60% drop or more next weekend.

Though, this couldn't have helped THE DUKES out -- that's a pretty large chunk of change!

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Before Warner Bros. could release "Dukes of Hazzard," it agreed to pay $17.5 million in an out-of-court settlement to a group of people who held rights to the TV show, and whose litigation threatened to hold up the film's release. A delay would have been harmful to the studio since it was already committed to a major advertising campaign.

According to the same story:

---

Two recent bombs tumbled down the charts. The military thriller "Stealth" slid three places to No. 7 with $5.8 million, taking the 10-day haul for the picture to $24.5 million. The cloning thriller "The Island" was also down three places, to No. 10, with $3.1 million, and a three-week haul of $30.9 million. Each cost about $120 million to make.

This has to be one of THE worst summers for movies I've seen yet. Either by quality and/or my interest level.

Trust me, compared to the summer of 1980, this year is pure vintage all the way.

That's a good point. Other than EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, what was there? NINE TO 5, SMOKEY & THE BANDIT 2, STIR CRAZY?
