Except that's just a demo -- they're not actually using new FX here, right?

On a side note, when the movie-cut of the pilot was released in the UK, most of the Cassiopea scenes were cut. It wasn't until the video release we were able to see those scenes.

That's correct, this was a demo done by an FX artist (I think they worked on Ron Moore's BSG) who then brought it to Universal to see if they would be interested in revamping the effects for the show. According to articles on various movie sites this week, Universal pondered for about a year and then ultimately declined. Nothing like what happened with the original TREK series on blu-ray is happening with BSG Classic.

That probably explains why it looks similar to the BSG fx work.

The "definitive" set is down to $84 as an Amazon preorder:

Eric Paddon wrote:Because the "definitive" collection has all the contents of the "remastered" collection plus the episodes presented in their CORRECT aspect ratio, which I suspect is drawn from the older transfers, meaning only the compromised format episodes were given a remastering. Not very good on Universal's part, though I ordered the set anyway.
I missed this -- I have the German BSG with the 4:3 HD transfers. The image is very, very good and was remastered for high-def, with crisp detail and DTS MA audio. I doubt the 16:9 HD transfers, image wise, are going to look any different, except for the framing. Universal is just throwing "remastered" around as a selling gimmick.

A 17 minute video of a guy talking about a Blu-Ray? My god.

I have the UK set, which works fine in my PS3 and Oppo players. I believe this is pretty much the same thing of what we're getting next year, except that these are the 4x3 editions, which is IMO the way to go. The HD transfers look good - at least as good as we'll ever get. There are no new VFX and I wouldn't have expected any to be there. The bonus materials are mostly on the sixth disc, with the exception of deleted scenes. I don't believe there are any bonus materials for G80.

Andy,
I know how much you like the film ratings. Not too big for you?

All those fracks and felgercarbs! :)

Some people could interpret that phrase as a warning that there isn't enough coarse language!

John
if it's a matter of saving $40+ I'm okay with it. Lol

I sold my German set so I might pick this up. I don't want cropped 16:9 transfers and you can always buy the movie Blu Ray for $5 if you need it (which I dont). The US release seems ridiculously overpriced.
