THE LION IN WINTER - US Blu-Ray From Kino Lorber

#1 Post by AndyDursin »

Should be the same transfer as the UK Blu-Ray (Studio Canal restoration) I'd imagine. Well done Kino!

Paul imported the UK disc, so I'm not sure! :?

Actually the Kino discs aren't cheap at first release so it's probably a wash.

However, there is a 2000 commentary that will be included that WASN'T on the Studio Canal disc.

Whoops I'm mistaken -- the commentary IS on the Studio Canal disc too.

I would assume after working to use the Studio Canal restoration on ONE MILLION YEARS B.C. that Kino did the same here on THE LION IN WINTER. Certainly would make sense, as MGM (who distributes the Avco Embassy/Studio Canal package in the US) for years reportedly said they had nothing decent in their own library.

But seriously...no, I don't regret buying the Studio Canal disc, which looks great.

Is the Studio Canal disc all region? I don't even know!

It's not, the Studio Canal titles are always locked.

Doesn't matter though, the price is about the same! :)

Thanks for the news, John!

I haven't even watched the blu-ray disc which I own yet! But I think I'll wait until March for my next screening of this movie!

I know what you mean Paul.

I have Blu-rays/DVDs from Australia, China and the UK still to watch.

Really weird exchange at the HTF between Kino and "Insider" Robert Harris, who more or less trashed Kino's new Blu-Ray, though he made it sound like it originated from the really terrible MGM HD master from years back (I noticed he's since walked back some of his comments).

I don't have Kino's disc yet (and won't unless they send me a review copy), but what Harris is describing is not my experience -- at all -- with the fine Studio Canal UK Blu-Ray (Studio Canal produced the 4K restoration and it's their transfer on the Kino release).

Very strange...

So the Kino Lorber BD has the same transfer on the UK Studio Canal disc?

Yes, same transfer -- they licensed Studio Canal's 4K restoration.

Kino added their own 5.1 audio track, because some were critical of the audio on the UK disc.

Kino did send me a review copy and I checked out a few minutes last night.

Kino's audio has been streamlined, somewhat successfully. There's definitely been some equalization applied because some of the jumps between quiet dialogue and music/effects were intermittently jarring in the Region 2 Studio Canal release. Here, I wasn't reaching for my remote as often in the few scenes I did a comparison between.

Kino's 5.1 track is not a stereo remix, it's just a gentle rechanneling into the center of the mono track, but it slightly improves the source so those tonal differences aren't as vast.. That and the 2.0 mono track both seem a little bit better with normalized levels. It's not a huge difference, but a welcome one IMO.

Outside of the audio, the two discs breakdown roughly this way:

-Transfer is the same, from the same source
-Kino disc carries over the Harvey commentary, drops the interviews from the Studio Canal release, adds the trailer (not on the SC release) and an exclusive interview with the sound recordist (10 mins)
