Memorial Day Box-Office - Worst in 18 Years!

#1 Post by AndyDursin »

Combined with the tepid ALIEN (to say nothing of a run of the mill FAST AND FURIOUS offering), Summer '17 is NOT off to a good start.

I wish that Dwayne Johnson would stop coasting off of his charisma and actually start acting in movies that aren't one-joke gag premises. :? And, seriously, SIX YEARS after the last Pirates movie that nobody liked, another one? This is going to be this summer's Alice Through The Looking Glass, a contractual obligation for everyone involved (and, if the rumors about Depp blowing through his SIX HUNDRED MILLION DOLLAR fortune are accurate, he'll probably push for a sixth one  ).

God, I don't think I'm keenly anticipating ANYthing coming out this summer aside from Edgar Wright's Baby Driver, and that will undoubtedly get lost amidst all of the high-profile franchise pics surrounding it in late June. Another gloomy DC superhero movie? A third Cars (this will be the first Pixar movie I totally skip in theaters)? Yet another Despicable Me crammed with obnoxious Minion schtick?

The whole idea of taking a pretty family friendly TV show like BAYWATCH or CHIPS and turning it into a "hard R" dumb comedy filled with sex jokes is just baffling to me. Shows Hollywood types have NO CLUE at all what they are doing. And yeah, I guess it's because they followed the lead of 21 JUMP STREET, but the reality is that show wasn't ever as popular as CHIPS or BAYWATCH -- it was mostly just a "fad" of the 80s -- so the sheer fact they were even making it was a joke onto itself. There's no fanbase around on JUMP STREET to care one way or another, but there are people still familiar with CHIPS and BAYWATCH to know these movies don't resemble "the brand" they're familiar with at all.

BAYWATCH is going to be a real test of Johnson's box-office appeal, but I agree, it looks like an incredibly poor choice on his behalf, even by the standards of some of the movies he's made.

As for PIRATES, it's sad a series that started off so well never was able to recapture the fun of the original. Can't blame them for trying, as the 4th one even pulled off $1 billion+ worldwide, but it does show not everything Disney touches turns to gold...mostly the franchises they consume from other entities like Star Wars and Marvel.
Yet another Despicable Me crammed with obnoxious Minion schtick?
It definitely serves the target audience. Speaking of that, our 3 year old will likely be happy. So will I provided it's better than SECRET LIFE OF PETS and ZOOTOPIA. We haven't brought him back to the movies since those!

Though at this point, if it's not dinosaur or train related, he may not care that much. He's worked his way through all 14 of the LAND BEFORE TIME movies I bought him for Easter!

Yes it's amazing lol. All direct to video and they've been made over a long period of time too.

Here's another good article on summer movie struggles...Paramount in particular is in big trouble:

Might as well turn this into the weekend box-office thread.

Paramount in big trouble, BAYWATCH is a bust. PIRATES is pretty much in line with the last one, so they might be fine. The opening is solid at least:
UPDATED 12:10 PM: Matinee grosses are starting to come in and so far the fifth installment of Disney’s, Jerry Bruckheimer and Johnny Depp’s Pirates franchise is playing well. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is on track to take in about $24M to $26M today — that includes the $5.5M it grossed in previews last night. So that means that right now, it’s estimated to take around $65M for the three-day with a four-day weekend of right around $75M to $80M. On the flipside, Paramount Pictures’ R-rated hopeful Baywatch may only take in $6.5M to $7M today with a four-day holiday of $23M to $24M and a five-day cume right around what we said this AM: $27M to $29M. Baywatch is stuck in the sand, playing slow in its first two nights of evening play so grosses might even dip lower. Will see how it plays tonight but so far it’s not seeing any big audience play on that rating.

3). Baywatch (PAR), 3,647 theaters / $5.7M Fri. / 3-day cume: $16.5M to $17M / 4-day: $20M to $21M / Total: $24.8M to $25.8M / Wk 1 Wednesday bow

4). Alien: Covenant (FOX), 3,772 theaters (+11) / $3M Fri. (-80%) / 3-day cume: $11M (-69%) / 4-day: $13.75M / Total: $60.5M / Wk 2

6). Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul (FOX), 3,174 theaters (+17) / $1.28M Fri. (-36%) / 3-day cume: $4.8M (-32%) / 4-day: $6.47M / Total: $15.6M / Wk 2

Worst memorial day weekend in nearly 2 decades at the US box office. Just sad.
