What a smackdown.

Ordinarily I wouldn't care about this kind of personal thing, but Whedon and his politics have grown so insufferable, that finding out he's an alleged hypocrite -- and even more of a d-bag than he appears publicly -- is beyond ironic.

It doesn't surprise me. The most insufferable of judgmental Hollywood Fat Cats are inevitably the biggest hypocrites when it comes to how they live their own lifestyles.

I my experience, hypocrisy is not all that unusual among men who call themselves "feminists".

I know someone who has devoted the better part of his life to fighting sexism, and exalts himself as an example of "male feminism" -- and even labeled me "sexist" on a few occasions. He has also bedded copious women (and had a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old girl when was 21). He does the "male feminist" thing to impress women. He found early-on that vociferously decrying the sexism and predatory behavior of his gender (particularly white males) was a great way of impressing the chicks.

When I was in college, I was also accused of "sexism" by a few male classmates -- who were likewise openly promiscuous, enjoyed pornography, etc. One fellow I knew, who incessantly carped about "sexism", was also inappropriately touchy-feely with many of the girls (a lot of whom -- unsurprisingly -- found him creepy).

Many men who support abortion rights claim to do so because they "respect women" -- when it is obvious they just want to be able to sleep around without paying child support.

Gene Roddenberry comes to mind as someone who carved for himself a big reputation as a socially enlightened "progressive" but who was a total Neanderthal when it came to women. It was really a laugh how he tried to push the lie that chauvanism in NBC executives was why the concept of a female second in command went out the window when in fact it was NBC taking a very enlightened stance against the casting couch. And there are some people who have wondered if the "Executive" Grace Lee Whitney refused to name in her memoir was really him (there was one inadvertent giveaway in her description of events that points to Roddenberry when juxtaposed with an anecdote mentioned in Justman's memoir. I agree we'll never know the full details but whereas I was once firmly of the belief that it couldn't have been Roddenberry I'm now more unsure on the matter)

Disturbing article. It is one side of the story; however, if her account is accurate (despite Joss' contrary claims), it does not surprise me. It is unfortunate, but I wonder how many people in Hollywood/entertainment industry are/have been the same way? I suppose this is all a part of living in our entertainment climate nowadays - air the dirty laundry, expose people for who they (supposedly) really are, get press for it, etc. The funny thing is that you can expose someone for being a complete monster, but it seems like they never pay a consequence for it. Maybe they do - it seems like they don't. Even if the article is true, I am sure that Joss will continue to receive awards from feminists and continue to find high profile work in Hollywood. People will continue to laud him. Sad...in a way it defines the decline of ethics in the public discourse and "autonomous morality" gone amuck. Accountability and integrity seem non-existent anymore (generally speaking).
