Box Office Weekend 5/17: Angels and Demons Vs. Trek

#1 Post by AndyDursin »

Hanks will come out on top but the grosses aren't as high as they were expecting (who's surprised?). TREK's drop looks to be 50% or maybe a little less, which is perfectly respectable.

I will update these Monday as I'm out for the weekend. Cheers!

EXCLUSIVE BOX OFFICE EARLY ESTIMATES: ANGELS & DEMONS $16M Fri & $45M 3-Day

EXCLUSIVE BOX OFFICE EARLY ESTIMATES: STAR TREK $12.25M Fri & $39M 3-Day [$144.6M cume]

EXCLUSIVE BOX OFFICE EARLY ESTIMATES: WOLVERINE $4.2M Fri & $14M 3-Day [$150.3M cume]

EXCLUSIVE BOX OFFICE EARLY ESTIMATES: GHOSTS OF GIRLFRIENDS $2M Fri & $6.1M 3-Day [$39.3M cume]

EXCLUSIVE BOX OFFICE EARLY ESTIMATES: OBSESSED $1.3M Fri & $4.1M 3-Day [$62.1M cume]

..."Sources tell me that Friday's opening North American grosses for Imagine/Sony's Angels & Demons were at least $17 million Friday from 3,527 theaters. After less than expected matinees, "it's been getting better as the night goes on -- so the number could even be a little bigger," a Sony exec tells me. "Everything points to a huge adult Saturday." So the studio believes the weekend total can't be lower than $47M-$49M and still has a shot at the $50M Sony wanted. "That, plus the great results we got today around the world, put us on target for the big worldwide opening we've hoped for."

But rival studios predicting a $55M-$60M domestic weekend called the result "very disappointing". ("Me thinks those reviews might be the final nail in the coffin," one exec quipped.) Especially since this wasn't a cheap movie to make what with all the top dollar and/or gross players involved like Tom Hanks, Ron Howard, Brian Grazer. Screenwriter Akiva Goldsman received $4 million, a new high for a book adaptation. Another marquee scripter, David Koepp, rewrote the screenplay before shooting."

I'm mildy surprised that Angels and Demons would overtake Trek at the top of the box office but then again, it's pretty clear that the public is jumping all over anything new that comes out at this point. I would easily bet on Trek's staying power this summer over that thing.

Geez, that's some lineup. One of my students is an insomniac, I should just take her to the movies each night. Then again, she'd probably dig this junk.

ANGELS & DEMONS is doing huge biz internationally because of the success of DA VINCI CODE. However, they over-estimated its Sunday gross domestically so STAR TREK was in reality even closer to it...and in fact beat it Saturday and Sunday. A 42% drop for TREK is terrific in this day and age.

Andy,
Are you going to review the extended BD of Da Vinci Code? I'm interested to know what the extra scenes are. As for the sequel, I enjoyed it. A little bit different from the book, but overall, a good film.

Didn't get a copy of it. I'll shoot an email off and see if it's too late.

Like the first film, I enjoyed Angels and Demons. Once I switch over to BD I will be getting the extended version of DVC. Looking forward to reading The Lost Symbol in September.
