Weekend Box Office 5/23: SHREK #1, MacGRUBER Bombs

#1 Post by AndyDursin »

Remember the days when they made SNL features from sketches that were actually funny? Now they make SNL features from sketches that have never been funny.

Talk about a bomb. At least with a $10 million budget (not sure if that doesn't include marketing though) they won't be losing a bundle.

1. Shrek Forever After 3D (DWA/Par) NEW [4,359 Theaters]
Friday $20M, Saturday $29M, Weekend $72M
2. Iron Man 2 (Marvel/Paramount) Week 3 [4,177 Theaters]
Friday $7.8M, Saturday $11.4M, Weekend $26M, Cume $256M
3. Robin Hood (Universal) Week 2 [3,505 Theaters]
Friday $5.5M, Saturday $7.9M, Weekend $18.5M (-49%), Cume $66M

4. Letters To Juliet (Summit) Week 2 [2,975 Theaters]
Friday $3M, Saturday $3.7M, Weekend $9M (-34%), Cume $27.2M
5. Just Wright (Fox Searchlight/Fox) Week 2 [1,831 Theaters]
Friday $1.3M, Saturday $1.9M, Weekend $4.3M (-48%), Cume $14.7M
6. MacGruber (Rogue/Universal) NEW [2,551 Theaters]
Friday $1.6M, Saturday $1.5M, Weekend $4.1M
7. Date Night (Fox) Week 7 [1,869 Theaters]
Friday $1M, Estimated Weekend $3M, Estimated Cume $90M

Good. I always like it when obvious turds bomb.

Did anyone really think MacGruber be worth two damns? Really?

I gave up watching SNL years ago. I don't feel like I've missed a thing.

SNL is utterly horrible. I think it's been in one of its worst cycles for years now. I do watch it from time to time because, well, there's nothing else on late Saturday night, but the writing is just atrocious. A few of the cast members like Kristen Wiig CAN be funny -- but often times she just shows up and plays a retarded/idiot character with a weird voice, over and over and over again. Not funny.

MacGRUBER is unlikely to even reach its production budget. If you only make $4 mil in your opening weekend, you're unlikely to double that. And it won't bring in a dime internationally, they won't even release it theatrically likely overseas.

Universal has been on a REAL roll of late, one bomb after another.

I haven't even heard of MacGruber. I haven't watched SNL in at least 10-15 years, so I have no idea what characters they are even doing anymore.
