#1 Post by John Johnson »

Optimum Home Entertainment have announced the UK DVD and Blu-ray Disc release of The Ghost on 30th August 2010. Based on his best-selling novel and adapted for the screen by Robert Harris, this political thriller is directed by Roman Polanski. The film tracks the tale of a British Ghost writer (Ewan McGregor) who is commissioned to re-write the memoirs of former British Prime Minister, Adam Lang (Pierce Brosnan), after his predecessor mysteriously dies. The closely guarded memoirs are kept under lock and key at Lang’s family retreat in America by his protective assistant and mistress (Kim Cattrall), surrounded by a desolate and barren landscape, across which the ghost re-traces his predecessors steps and uncovers startling truths.

Priced at £17.99 RRP on DVD and £22.99 RRP on Blu-ray, extras include:

Oh you mean GHOST WRITER -- nobody in this country knows the film by that title.

That's the title in the UK. Why it was changed for the U.S. market, who knows?

Probably because most viewers here would associate it with a horror movie. Or confusion with GHOST itself.

Reminds me when they had to changed the title of Bond 16, Licence Revoked to Licence To Kill, as well as the first Harry Potter film.

Oddly, looks like the only place it retained its GHOST title was the UK market. Was retitled GHOST WRITER everywhere else it looks like.

Undoubtedly it was to avoid confusion with the Demi Moore movie, and also with any hints of it being expressly supernatural. Makes sense.

They probably retained the title for the UK market because it was based on a British novel and more people over there know the title because of the novel. Everywhere else, I'm guessing the book wasn't as popular and/or people weren't familiar with the title, so they changed it for the above reasons.
