Weekend Box Office 12/12 - NARNIA #1 But Weak
Decent opening for NARNIA -- but not great considering it's in 3-D -- maybe it'll get bumped up over the holidays.
The horribly-reviewed (and quite terrible looking) THE TOURIST tanked even with Jolie and Depp starring. Looks like Johnny needed another paycheck before the next Pirates (as if he needed one!).

Re: Weekend Box Office 12/12 - NARNIA #1, TOURIST Bombs
This is also a "calm before the storm" of the next 10 days, when big titles like the well-reviewed THE FIGHTER, TRON, TRUE GRIT and others all open, competing for the same dollars.
Re: Weekend Box Office 12/12 - NARNIA #1, TOURIST Bombs
Definitely calm before storm and I expect this gets a nice boost through holidays. I really think 3D is a relative nonfactor at this point up or down for reasons we've all discussed a million times.AndyDursin wrote:Decent opening for NARNIA -- but not great considering it's in 3-D -- maybe it'll get bumped up over the holidays.
Good. It's basically a smut film from what I gather. I hope it craters.

I don't know that THE TOURIST is a "smut" movie (isn't it PG-13?), but I've read people calling it "laughably bad".
Re: Weekend Box Office 12/12 - NARNIA #1, TOURIST Bombs
I thought there was some kind of supposedly super raunchy sex scene between these two that was generating some buzz but at PG-13 I guess not or they took it out.AndyDursin wrote:I don't know that THE TOURIST is a "smut" movie (isn't it PG-13?), but I've read people calling it "laughably bad".
Or they'll have it in the unrated extended version that comes out on disc. Whooptie-doo.
In any event, it looked like garbage, sounds like garbage and I'm glad it's doing poorly.

NARNIA didn't get any kind of matinee bounce. Estimates have it revised downwards at $25 million, so it's certainly going to be the end of the road one anticipates for that franchise.

Hmmm...not very promising.AndyDursin wrote:NARNIA didn't get any kind of matinee bounce. Estimates have it revised downwards at $25 million, so it's certainly going to be the end of the road one anticipates for that franchise.
You don't think it's going to get a bounce once the kids are out of school and Christmas break and all that happen and you need something to take grandma and the kids out to on Christmas day or some such?

Unfortunately if it didn't get a bounce on a Saturday or Sunday when kids aren't in school, it's probably not going to do very big business. Remember it's also in 3-D so that gooses the grosses typically. All things considered $25 million is a borderline disaster (it's lower than the openings for ERAGON and GOLDEN COMPASS), I think they were hoping for $40 million or thereabouts. You don't think it's going to get a bounce once the kids are out of school and Christmas break and all that happen and you need something to take grandma and the kids out to on Christmas day or some such?
There will be other movies for family audiences too. Next weekend you also get the PG-rated TRON which is aimed at a wide audience and kids in particular (and "looks cooler") plus the terrible looking GULLIVER'S TRAVELS on Christmas Day which is also a family movie too and with Jack Black will probably have some crossover appeal. Thus, I think NARNIA is pretty much DOA.

Wow. That's all true. Definitely not looking good for this at all. I guess this is the end of the movie series.AndyDursin wrote:Unfortunately if it didn't get a bounce on a Saturday or Sunday when kids aren't in school, it's probably not going to do very big business. Damn. That's sad when you're going to take a dive for a Jack Black flick and especially something that looks as terrible as that does. I hope that thing bombs.

I do too. But between that, TRON and even YOGI BEAR, there are a number of family flicks coming out. Doesn't bode well for NARNIA.Damn. That's sad when you're going to take a dive for a Jack Black flick and especially something that looks as terrible as that does. I hope that thing bombs.

I wonder how that bodes for the possibility of more sequels. There are seven books altogether. Perhaps they will wind-up direct-to-home video releases?AndyDursin wrote:Thus, I think NARNIA is pretty much DOA.

Re: Weekend Box Office 12/12 - NARNIA #1, TOURIST Bombs
It's entirely possible they could do that, especially if the film performs well on video and internationally. So it may not be "the end." However, I think it's pretty much over for another theatrical sequel produced on this kind of level. The budget on this sequel was $150 million -- but $100 mil under PRINCE CASPIAN (which tells you how much of a flop that film was). Opening under $25 million is really a huge disappointment from a financial standpoint...almost "flop" category.Paul MacLean wrote:I wonder how that bodes for the possibility of more sequels. FWIW I saw a couple of reviews that said this sequel ends on a "note of finality" for these particular characters.
