Regardless of ratings, you know TF is going to perform at least short term and through a holiday weekend like this.

That's going to be another interesting "how's 3D really doing" litmus test.

It's running, I think they said, 28% under TF2 for the first few days -- and that's WITH 3-D, which it didn't have before.

So it's big, but it's not massive.

Obviously we'll have to see how it holds up for the next few weekends.

And that's with the 3D premium? Wow, that's got to be considered an underperformance there.

It is, but they'll spin it and tell you it'll hold up over the next few weeks because the movie is "better." Of course I'm not taking their word for it 8)

Putting it into perspective...

Transformers: Dark of the Moon amassed $156.6 million for its five-day opening ($162.1 million total including Tuesday night previews), edging out Spider-Man 2's $152.4 million as the ninth highest-grossing five-day start ever.

...While the first Transformers made $133.3 million by day five (including previews), the second one, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, collected $200.1 million by its fifth day. What's more, Dark of the Moon's estimated attendance was far below Dark of the Moon and Spider-Man 2 and even behind the first Transformers by over ten percent. Dark of the Moon's 3D share of the gross was 60 percent at a record 2,789 3D locations, which was stronger than the 40 percent range showings of the last four major 3D releases (Cars 2, Green Lantern, Kung Fu Panda 2, Pirates 4) but still down from the format's glory days. Dark of the Moon's exit polling results were 62 percent male (compred to 54 percent male for Revenge of the Fallen) and 55 percent under 25 years old.

It wasn't enough to overcome the stench of Revenge of the Fallen, but the franchise's fumes were still strong enough and Dark of the Moon's spectacle great enough in an unspectacular summer to yield likely the first $300 million plus movie of the year.

In second place, Cars 2 sprang a leak. The Pixar sequel slowed 62 percent to an estimated $25.1 million. That was the steepest second-weekend drop yet for a Pixar movie and was significantly worse than WALL-E (off 48 percent) and the first Cars (off 44 percent) at the same point. With $116 million in ten days, Cars 2's total was slightly behind Cars' $117.1 million at the ten-day mark, and attendance was even worse. While Transformers: Dark of the Moon had a 60 percent 3D share, Cars 2's fell to around 35 percent from 40 percent last weekend.

I knew it. This won't cross the $200 million mark. Adult Pixar fans pretty much hated it, which means virtually no repeat business.

Just an FYI...this movie's domestic grosses were much lower, but it doesn't matter...in terms of overall sales it's already passed AT WORLD'S END. $1 bil is a hell of a lot of money.

Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides just crossed $1 billion in global box office today.

The pic had grossed $995.4M globally as of June 30th, and $232,1M domestically as of July 1st. This will be the second Pirates of the Caribbean film to reach $1B, after 2006’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest. Rounding out the studios’ four billion-dollar earners are 2010’s Alice in Wonderland and Toy Story 3. Five of the 10 biggest films of all time are now from The Walt Disney Studios.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is now the 8th film in history to reach the $1B threshold, The Walt Disney Studios’ 4th title to earn $1B, the 3rd Disney film in less than 18 months to gross $1B globally, and the Biggest international opening ever, and the #3 film of all time at the international box office. It also crossed the $500M international threshold in a record-setting 14 days, and crossed the $800M global threshold in only 20 days, the second fastest ever to reach this milestone. Pic set a new industry speed record by crossing the $700M global threshold in only 16 days. It's Disney’s biggest international release ever, and the biggest Pirates of the Caribbean installment in 58 territories as well as the highest-grossing Disney film ever released in China and Russia. It's nearing $100M USD in Japan, where it’s been #1 for all 6 weeks of release.
