Weekend Box Office 7/15: Pirates Sails Again

#1 Post by AndyDursin »

Looks like it's the end of the line for SUPERMAN, which now being beaten on a per-screen average by PRADA -- could this be like PLANET OF THE APES where the eventual gross will by off-set by the expense of its production and lack of enthusiasm in terms of word of mouth? (at this point, domestically speaking, I think we're talking possibly even a smaller gross than what APES generated several years ago!). I for one could live without sequels, especially given the direction Bryan Singer chose to drive the story in. Hugely disappointing.

1. PIRATES 2 $18.5 m (per screen $4586, $214m total)
2. LITTLE MAN $7.6 m
3. YOU ME & DUPREE $7.3 m
4. SUPERMAN RETURNS $3.29 m (per screen: $840, total $155m)
5. DEVIL WEARS PRADA $3.21 m (per screen: $1140, total $76m)

Good riddance as far as I'm concerned. Bryan Singer deserves the wrath of Man of Steel fans for killing the franchise off again!!

I would think its tepid gross this weekend would only add fuel to the fire...

Weekend Projections -- even a 50% drop for Pirates isn't bad (is it not the highest 2nd week grossing movie ever?) at all, considering what it opened to last week!

1 1 Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest BV $62,186,000 ($258m total)
2 N Little Man SonR $21,700,000
3 N You, Me and Dupree Uni. $21,338,000
4 2 Superman Returns WB $11,620,000 ($163m total)
5 3 The Devil Wears Prada Fox $10,450,000 ($83m total)
6 5 Cars BV $7,536,000 ($217m total)
7 4 Click SonR $7,000,000 ($119m total)

62 million for the 2nd weekend? that's still more than many blockbusters do on their first weekend...

it deserves this success...
