Wow, that's an impressive hold for The Revenant, especially considering what a bleak and brutal film it is. Word of mouth must be very good.

Yeah I think it's getting all kinds of people out to see it, though I'm not sure about word of mouth. Right now it's DiCaprio that's pulling the heavy load of getting the turnout going. When I saw it, three women in their 30s got up and walked out 30 minutes in and did not return. There was also a guy behind me who went ballistic as soon as the credits started, telling his friend "That Sucked! I f-----ng HATED that movie!"

I did like the film quite a bit, not as much as you, but the physical production and cinematography were tremendous. After it was over though, I have to confess: I found THE GREY as satisfying, if not perhaps more so. It wasn't as "artistic" but also didn't drag on for 150+ minutes. They could have taken a solid 20-30 minutes out of THE REVENANT, though I was never bored by it. Good movie, interesting use of score also. The cinematography was the main draw for me.

HATEFUL EIGHT going to be Tarantino's lowest grossing film since JACKIE BROWN, and far under it after inflation is factored in.

I believe you're forgetting Grindhouse, which was another movie where the "retro" presentation gimmick -- i.e. the drive-in double-feature thing, or the 70MM presentation w/overture and intermission -- was given more advertising space than telling people what the hell the movies were actually about. :? Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained were simply sold by the narratives (killing Nazis and killing racist slave owners), which is why they appealed outside of Tarantino's usual fanbase.
