JJ Abrams Returns to Direct STAR WARS EPISODE IX

#1 Post by AndyDursin »

The Disney STAR WARS firing squad is at it again, this time axing Colin Trevorrow from his EPISODE IX gig.
Lucasfilm and Colin Trevorrow have mutually chosen to part ways on Star Wars: Episode IX. Colin has been a wonderful collaborator throughout the development process but we have all come to the conclusion that our visions for the project differ. We wish Colin the best and will be sharing more information about the film soon.”

Sadly, these films are so micromanaged, a Boll-helmed Star Wars flick would come-out looking the same as if any other director had made it!

Hey, at least this time, they didn't let the director get 3/4ths of the way through production before canning him. :P

Remember they had canned Josh Trank on the first "Star Wars Story" too before it got started so they have experience firing people every which way. Lol

Seriously they have learned how much money they stand to make with these products and are not going to take any chances whatsoever. Not that Trevorrow or Lord/Miller are great directors by any means, but if they gave even an ounce of opposition to Kennedy and Company, the leash was so short that the plug would be pulled. And they don't care.

I can't figure WHY any director would sign onto a Star Wars movie at this point, as Kathleen Kennedy is essentially micro-managing the franchise to a ridiculously meticulous degree. When Lucas gave up the reigns to Disney, I had this vague hope that it'd inspire some gifted filmmakers a chance to add their own personal stamp to the franchise, but now it's akin to John Glen "directing" the James Bond movies in the 80's...he was just there to stitch together the various setpieces already established (and often ones that weren't used in earlier Bond movies because they got too long and overstuffed). I have a feeling Disney's SW empire is going to grow stale and repetitive as fast as the Pirates Of The Caribbean movies did...after the third "episode" following The Last Jedi, it's gonna be nothing more than increasingly marginal characters granted their own spin-off movies (coming Christmas 2023...Ree-Yees: Origins! ), instead of exploring completely new corners of the galaxy with all-new protagonists and villains.

If you're going to be happy directing a pre-ordained script -- and also bury any artistic pretense you might have -- then it's probably still worth making a STAR WARS movie still, just because you'll help your own career down the line. Just be aware you're going to be Tobe Hooper on POLTERGEIST, sitting in the corner yelling "Action!" while making someone else's movie. In this case, it's going to be a half-dozen executives and Kathy Kennedy telling you what to do.

Yeah, look at Bill Condon, who took the clout he received for making the last two Twilight movies to make...a pointless live-action retread of Beauty & The Beast. :|

But for Bill Condon, that's exactly what he wants -- making big Broadway musicals! It may have been a pointless exercise but it made a fortune and so did he. For him, that's where he wants to be so it definitely was a good thing.

Lets face it...most all of these guys want to make a lot of money, it's why they are all there. Doing one of these, showing you can work in the studio system, should give you the opportunity to make something you really want down the line...even if you end up following Gore Verbinskis lead and make small things nobody cares about.

Besides Condon is at a whole different stage of his life than these younger guys. He's aready made "personal films," I'm sure he's thrilled with making gobs of cash turning out recycled fare at this stage of his career (and especially in a genre he likes). He's had his GODS AND MONSTERS moment already.

JJ to the rescue. Must be the only one Disney trusts at this point -- Rian Johnson turned them down, by the way!
PREVIOUS EXCLUSIVE: Rian Johnson decided not to take the offer to come back and replace the recently departed Colin Trevorrow on Star Wars: Episode IX. Now, Disney and Lucasfilm are courting another director for an encore, the one who relaunched the franchise to dizzying heights. Deadline hears the studio is in talks with JJ Abrams, and sources said they are trying to work out a deal for him to return. This is expected to happen today.

Abrams revived the franchise with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, whose $2.06 billion worldwide gross made it the third highest-grossing film of all time behind James Cameron’s Avatar and Titanic.

Abrams is in discussions to replace Trevorrow, who exited the picture after creative differences with Lucasfilm and its chief Kathleen Kennedy. All this happens as Ron Howard stepped in to replace Phil Lord & Chris Miller as director of the Han Solo spinoff movie.

Johnson’s film, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, launches December 15. Abrams has been producing everything from Westworld to M:I6-Mission Impossible, and the Stephen King anthology series Castle Rock, and conveniently doesn’t have a next film to direct. And he certainly can be a steadying hand in settling The Force. He’s repped by CAA.

I have no problem with this...Abrams did a bang-up job with The Force Awakens, and I'm sure he has more clout to stand up to Disney than anyone else associated with these new movies to date.

He's going to make exactly the movie Disney wants. That's the bottom line here.

Disney's issue is they will have to pay him more (perhaps a lot more if he gets a percentage), but given how Force Awakens turned out -- a nice, safe rehash that made a bundle -- they can afford it. Given all the trouble they've had on all of these other films, it's also the easiest solution.

The bots will direct the next one lol...
