Disney's planned streaming service

#1 Post by jkholm »

The headline is about Marvel and Star Wars movies leaving Netflix and becoming part of Disney's planned streaming service but there's some other interesting info as well.
There’ll be four or five original Disney-branded films made exclusively for the online service, as well as four-to-five original Disney-branded TV series. The app will also have Disney’s film library of nearly 500 films, and 7,000 episodes from the TV library. The CEO expects to have “thousands” of shorts and “will produce more original short-form content” for it.
The planned Disney app “will have the entire output of the studio — animation, live action and Disney including Pixar, Star Wars and all of the Marvel films,” Iger says.
The entire output? Really? I'm guessing Song of the South won't be included. Still, if the service has the animated shorts, the True-Life Adventures and the obscure live-action films it might be worth it.

Disney will be able to pull it off because they're Disney but I think it's a bad overall move for consumers when studios start up their own services and exclusively lock their content there. CBS is doing it and it's probably a matter of time before other majors consider it too, forcing viewers to pay for a slew of these services and rising rates.

IMO The "cord cutting" for online streaming is going to end up looking a lot like pay cable TV when all is said and done.
