Weekend Box Office 9/10 - IT's Huge

#1 Post by AndyDursin »

Truly remarkable opening for IT...will post more numbers later:
[UPDATED 11:32 PM: The studio that gave us A Nightmare on Elm Street and The Conjuring horror franchises has created another milestone for the genre with their feature adaptation of Stephen King’s It, which is now on course to slot the best opening day ever for an R-rated and horror title with an estimated $49.6M (easily smashing Deadpool‘s $47.3M) and the second best R-title three-day with $101M, behind Deadpool‘s $132.4M. In addition, for any post-summer title opening before November, It‘s weekend is higher than anything released prior in September or October.

Jesus...I was thinking that It would top out with less than half of what it actually made. :o I'm sure it'll have the usual second-weekend plunge, but with it's modest budget (around $40 million), it's going to be RIDICULOUSLY profitable, and I'm sure WB will fast-track the second half by Monday.

Yeah even with any kind of sizable drop this will end up one of the biggest horror movies of all time. The budget I read had it pegged at $35 mil which seems about right. No stars right worry about everything ended up on screen.

I am also surprised how high it went. It's not as if the King name means anything in terms of driving audiences these days, so it's really a mix of a hungry and dire marketplace, a younger crowd fixated on the whole creepy clown social media thing, solid promotion and then the remake factor/book/TV mini/King element on top.

I can't imagine they are not ready to go with "Chapter 2". The only question is whether they will cast some recognizable actors...and also stretch it into 3 parts as Warner loves to do with their Potter and Hobbits!

That's my biggest fear, stretching Part Two into a third installment. :? Then again, that's a trend that seems to be on the wane, if the second half of the last Divergent movie getting cancelled is any indication. And the forthcoming last Maze Runner movie was deliberately not padded out for two movies.

I've been reading some ridiculous "wish lists" for the adult versions of the Loser's Club for the second film (like Chris Pratt will play Ben Hanscomb...although he is a former fattie who made good), but Jessica Chastain as the adult Beverly Marsh is a strong possibility...she's the right age, and already worked with the director on Mama. They don't really "need" name actors for the second half, anyways, considering how much money part one made, where the only cast member anyone would recognize was "the kid from Stranger Things".

One amusing idea for Beverly I've heard is Molly Ringwald (given a funny reference in the film), but she's about a decade too old, and has already delivered a mediocre performance in a King adaptation with The Stand. I'm sure the adult cast they pick will the big-screen version of the TV miniseries...a collection of solid professionals with maybe one or two semi-well known picks (like Harry Anderson and John Ritter).

Andy, I think you're right about the clowns on social media thing. I feel like half of my middle schoolers went to see it last night (and they never seem to be up on current movies). They all came in tired cause they couldn't sleep. All they want to talk about is creepy clowns. I don't think the book/old miniseries/King factor into this AT all.

Thanks for the insight John -- I'm wagering you are right, and it was my suspicion because there just aren't enough "Stephen King crazies" around in 2017 to drive that kind of gross forward.

I mean, when was the last King anything that made a ton of money? 1408 was a modest hit. THE MIST drew flies. THE GREEN MILE was the biggest King thing ever, but that was Tom Hanks in his prime and coming off SHAWSHANK -- a movie that utterly bombed itself initially and found an audience afterwards. All of that was a while back...and we had the deliriously awful DREAMCATCHER in the interim. And of course THE DARK TOWER was one of his "most anticipated film adaptations," and we all knew it was going to suck -- still, it wasn't as if it even opened well. His TV movies and series also don't bring in viewers like they once did.

IT does have some familiarity, no doubt, but $123 million worth? This was an insane, record breaking opening that sprang out of a special set of circumstances (including all that creepy clown stuff like you said) and it's unlikely to be repeated (except with IT 2). I mean, if Warner actually thinks they can suddenly crank out a SALEM'S LOT remake and get that kind of cash, they're fooling themselves. It truly was a unique set of circumstances -- including an awful summer -- that got people out to this movie.

The fact it's entertaining and well done helps too...though I would say it is NOT that scary. ANNABELLE ORIGINS I found prohibitively more disturbing -- not that it's as good of a film (it's not), but that movie had some eerie moments and IT, really, doesn't have any. Most of the shocks are telegraphed, obvious ones, the creatures are standard issue...it's the story and pacing that work well. I guess it's kind of like a horror movie for people who don't ordinarily like them -- which makes sense given how many people went to see it, far more than most any other genre exercise!

The Monday and Tuesday grosses are also record breakers, there won't be any big drop coming for IT's second weekend.

That Arofonsky film is going to get BURIED, especially considering it's some kind of Biblical/religious/ecological allegory masquerading as a gross-out horror movie. Word of mouth is going to be toxic especially among any younger viewer going to see it because Lawrence is in it (and I've read a few reviews that said she's terrible in it also). Wrong weekend to be opening that.
