Since this is running on Yahoo's front page I'm more likely to believe it than the usual online "news" sites (which yesterday had Brosnan returning!). I know nothing about Daniel Craig but apparently we'll be finding out about his mettle as Bond soon...

Honestly I can't look at Daniel Craig without seeing Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, so if this is true it'll take a little getting used to.
Clive Owen would've been the safe pick, I suppose, but give MGM and EON credit for thinking outside the box with their biggest franchise. Again, if it's true....

I've been down on 007 since the dawn of the Brosnan era. Not that a few of the movies haven't been entertaining in a mindless American action movie kind of way, but rather that the atmosphere and aura that is "James Bond" has been increasingly diminished throughout the course of his films.
I have mixed feelings, but I agree with you Mike. I can only guess that Eon knows more than the rest of us about Daniel Craig's abilities. I can only imagine that he's worked far more in British TV, etc. that we haven't seen over here, so just on the basis of TOMB RAIDER 2 it's tough to get a gauge of how good/bad he's supposed to be.
On that level, perhaps this is indeed a real change of course for Eon...back to the basics, which would be nice. The easiest thing for them to do would be to go with an established name, and if Craig is confirmed, that's definitely not what they did here.
I'd also love to hear Arnold do a "straight" 007 score without the techno aspects. If they ever let him do it, I'm sure he'd come through with flying colors.

"Producers of the forthcoming James Bond sequel have refused to comment on reports British star Daniel Craig has won the coveted superspy role. Craig, 37, was in competition with Closer star Clive Owen for the part of the spy, after Pierce Brosnan was ditched for demanding a staggering $42 million for his next Bond film. But Owen has since decided the role would limit his acting career and a leak from movie giant Eon Productions suggests producer Barbara Broccoli has offered the Layer Cake star a contract for the next three films. oh my... Daniel Craig is it now? He is one of the ugliest guys walking around on screen... what are they thinking? Do they expect the girls to run into the theaters for that guy? Im sure the Brosnan Bonds were to a large degree so succesful because all the girls and ladies think he is hot and therefor didn't mind their boyfriends dragging them in to an action movie. But with this guy?
Also he is no star, is he? Im sure 90 percent of the people asked don't know who that is.
Btw, he was in TOMB RAIDER 1 not 2... it's Gerard Butler in part 2.. who would have been a better Bond, though looking way too soft for that part.
Well, and at least Craig has some edge which Orlando Bloom never will have... I was really afraid that boy would get that part.. but anyhow, what do I care.. haven't watched any Bond movie in years...

It seems like Brosnan's return is just one more peg we can add to the rumor mill.
Two days ago USA Today ran a full spread on the candidates -- with an entire section exclusively devoted to Daniel Craig, who they tabbed as still being the leading contender. (USA Today generally isn't considered a tabloid, and they had quotes from Leonard Maltin and others in there about what's going on).
Frankly, if they don't go with a new Bond, I can't understand what Eon is doing here. If they bring back Brosnan, surely it's going to be only for one movie. Then we'll go through this entire, tedious process all over again in another 18 months once CASINO gets released.
The only thing I can think of is that Eon has been "floating" names into the public landscape and gauging what people think. Either that or Brosnan can see that his recent, non-007 films have been tanking, and has let up on his salary demands (which I were told were outrageously, riduclously over the top, something like $30-$40 million!).
It just makes you wonder what's going on if Eon brings him back. Perhaps the new bosses at Sony want it to happen?

Now that Sony has it, it'll become one of their tentpole franchises. To be fair, he was quite good in LAYER CAKE, which I hadn't seen back in April, so I'm not down on this move...looks to me like he'll bring some tougher, Dalton-like qualities to the role, but still has a flair for humor.romanD wrote:it is finally Daniel Craig...

They could have easily just brought Brosnan back and done another bloated action movie that would have grossed millions. Instead, I commend them for attempting to go a different route with a younger actor, which is supposed to fit in with the feel of the new movie. Fingers crossed, hopefully it'll truly revitalize the franchise, because box-office receipts are about the only thing the series has had going for it in the Brosnan era.
As I wrote back in April, it didn't make any sense to bring Brosnan back for one more movie, THEN go through the process again. Seems like Brosnan campaigned to come back, but they stuck to their initial plan. We'll see if it pays off.

I couldn't agree more, Andy. This series has been creatively bankrupt since GOLDENEYE (which I thought was a good mix of espionage-thriller and balls out action movie) ten years ago. Some might argue there hasn't been even a decent Bond flick since THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS.
