Network DVD - Deal Of the Week.

#1 Post by John Johnson »

When students Alex (David Ladd) and Patricia (Sharon Gurney) discover a dying man in their local underground station, they spark off an investigation that reveals a sinister and macabre plot that even sends shivers down the spines of hardened police officers Calhoun (Donald Pleasence - Halloween) and Rogers (Norman Rossington).

Prominent people, it seems, have been disappearing from London tube stations, and an MI5 agent (Christopher Lee - Dracula, The Lord of the Rings) is brought in to help solve the mysterious goings-on in central London. What is the terrible secret of the capital's underground system? And who - or what - is turning the London Underground into a Death Line..?

This version of Death Line is complete and uncut and presented in its original theatrical widescreen aspect ratio.

DEATHLINE aka RAW MEAT here in the US is one of those sleepers I'd been looking for for YEARS. I stumbled on it some time ago, and I was not disappointed (because I knew so little about it, just enough to be intrigued). Terrific flick for people like me who like movies that take place in abandoned buildings, tunnels, etc.

Donald Pleasance was a pleasant :P surprise--I've always thought he was fine but not one of the greats, but he's a real pleasure in this. I wish more screenwriters could write humorous CHARACTERS instead of just inserting one-liners.

The only disappointment for me is that Christopher Lee shows up, and his character would have made a great partner for Pleasance--but he's only in a glorified cameo.

A couple of Bela Lugosi films going cheap.

Scared to Death

“Pardon me, Professor, but didn’t I just see you outside baying at the moon?”

In a series of flashbacks, a dead young woman, Laura (Molly Lamont), recounts the story of her murder, from the mortuary slab. She tells a bizarre tale in which a cast of grotesque characters including a mysterious masked figure and an evil hypnotist, played by the legendary Bela Lugosi, have brought about her death - through sheer terror…

Scared to Death is a must for fans of Bela Lugosi, offering a unique opportunity to see the master of horror in his only major colour film appearance. Lugosi has frequently been described as ‘the personification of screen evil’, making the character of Dracula his own (he was even buried wearing the famous cape) and helping to popularise the horror genre. This Christy Cabanne-directed chiller also features memorable performances by Angelo Rossitto (Tod Browning’s Freaks) and George Zucco (The Hunchback of Notre Dame).

Corpse Vanishes (The)

Patricia Hunter: “Oh, professor, do you also make a habit of collecting coffins?”

Dr. Lorenz: “Why, yes, in a manner of speaking. I find a coffin much more comfortable than a bed.”

Deranged scientist Dr. Lorenz is obsessed with keeping his aged wife eternally youthful, and embarks on a killing spree, murdering virgin brides and storing their bodies in order to extract the precious glandular fluids he requires to make a rejuvenating serum. Assisted by a grotesque staff that includes ageing maid Fagah, her perverted and villainous son, Angel, and the sadistic dwarf butler Toby, Lorenz pursues his macabre project apparently unhindered – until young reporter Patricia and photographer Sandy are assigned to cover the society wedding of one of his victims. Having witnessed the appalling activities taking place at Dr. Lorenz’s isolated mansion, Patricia devises an elaborate plan to trap him; but she herself is an attractive woman in the full bloom of youth, a fact that will surely not escape Dr. Lorenz…

Bela Lugosi, the undisputed master of horror, makes full use of his talents in this outrageous black-and-white shocker from 1942. Also starring Angelo Rossitto and Tristram Coffin (King of the Rocket Men), The Corpse Vanishes firmly established Monogram Pictures’ hugely successful ‘mad scientist’ theme, which would be revisited to great effect throughout the 1940s.

The Adventurer was an ITC Entertainment TV adventure series created by Dennis Spooner that ran for one season from 1972 to 1973. It premiered in the UK on 29 September 1972.

The show starred Gene Barry as Gene Bradley, a government agent of independent means who poses as a glamourous American movie star. A Region 2 DVD release of the show is available from Network DVD, which features interviews with Morse, Damon and Schell. Morse nicely sums up the series in the extras on the Network DVD release of the show: "It wasn't the worst show ever made, but it certainly wasn't the best!"

Mystery and Imagination.

This highly acclaimed anthology series presented a selection of Gothic tales by major 19th century writers. Among the adapted works featured in this collection are Robert Louis Stevenson’s nihilistic The Suicide Club, Sheridan le Fanu’s Uncle Silas, Bram Stoker’s classic Dracula and a commendably faithful adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. A distinguished cast includes Ian Holm (Chariots of Fire), Denholm Elliot (Indiana Jones), Patrick Mower (Callan) and Freddie Jones (The Elephant Man), who gives an astonishing performance as the demented barber, Sweeney Todd.

This release contains every remaining episode of Mystery and Imagination and brings together all six of the feature-length teleplays produced by Thames Television between 1968 and 1970 alongside the two remaining ABC-produced episodes from 1966.

Special features:
• The Fall of the House of Usher and The Open Door – the two remaining, complete episodes produced by ABC in 1966 (Disc Four)
• An extract from Casting the Runes – all that exists from this 1968 ABC episode (Disc Four)
• Extensive image gallery (Disc One)
• Episode guide booklet by Archive TV historian Andrew Pixley
