Things to Come Special Edition

A future history as scripted by the visionary writer H.G. Wells, Things To Come set a high benchmark for science fiction with its fantastic design, gigantic sets and spectacular special effects. Acknowledged as a landmark within the genre, Oscar-winning William Cameron Menzies (Invaders from Mars) creates an astounding vision of post-war desolation and utopian futurism.

Starring Oscar-nominated Raymond Massey (A Matter of Life and Death) as John Cabal and his descendants and the award-winning Ralph Richardson (The Four Feathers) as The Boss, Things To Come showcases a gorgeous, and instantly recognisable, score by Arthur Bliss. A world first, this version of Things To Come has been painstakingly restored in High Definition from the remaining film elements and represents the most complete version known to exist.

It’s Christmas 1940 and the people of Everytown, unprepared and ill-equipped, find themselves at war against an enemy who has been planning such a conflict for years. The land is devastated by the horrors of aerial bombardment as the war drags on for thirty years, causing a period of despair, with feudal tyrants ruling a downtrodden populace suffering famine and pestilence. Can the human race rise above its desperate circumstances and build a scientific utopia?

Speaking of Shane Rimmer.

Shane Rimmer, the voice of Scott Tracy from Thunderbirds and numerous other Gerry Anderson series, has signed a contract with Reynolds & Hearn to publish his autobiography. Thunderbirds To Bond and Beyond will be launched in October 2010 to coincide with Fanderson's TV21 Convention in Bristol, which Rimmer will be attending as one of the headline guests. It is hoped that copies will be made available to be signed at the event.

Shane Rimmer has had a long and varied association with Gerry Anderson shows. As well as voicing the eldest Tracy brother, he voiced parts in Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons and Joe 90, as well as the eponymous gumshoe in the Dick Spanner stop-motion animated series of the late eighties. He also appeared onscreen in UFO and The Protectors, and guest-starred as the ill-fated astronaut Kelly in the Space:1999 episode Space Brain.

A seemingly ever-present supporting actor in the world of cult film and TV, Rimmer has appeared in several Bond and Superman films, as well as classics such as Dr Strangelove, The Bedford Incident and Star Wars. He appeared briefly in Batman Begins in 2005.

Another vintage series from ITC. This time it's the 1957 series The Sword of Freedom. Starring Edmund Purdom and Adrienne Corri, 39 half hour monochrome episodes were made.

Sword of Freedom: The Complete Series £39.99

It is 16th century Florence and the city is undergoing a renaissance. It is a city of poets and painters, wealth and marvels; but there’s a canker in the bosom of paradise – the city is ruled by the dangerous and power-hungry Duke de Medici, a duplicitous despot who will stop at nothing to expand his power base. He is opposed by a secret army of Republicans, of whom one such patriot is Marco del Monte: painter, swordsman, champion of the needy and Renaissance Man to the core, del Monte uses his wits, cunning and sword in the struggle to help overthrow the tyrant de Medici.

Another of ITC’s remarkably successful historical adventure series (alongside such shows as The Adventures of Robin Hood, William Tell and The Buccaneers), Sword of Freedom stars Edmund Purdom as swashbuckling artist Marco del Monte. With a guest cast featuring, among others, Peter Wyngarde, Geoffrey Bayldon, John Le Mesurier, Patrick Troughton, Michael Bryant and Andrew Keir, this is the first time that the complete series has been released in any format and is presented in production order.

Four Just Men (The): The Complete Series

#41 Post by John Johnson »

This ITC crime drama series, loosely based on Edgar Wallace’s novel of 1905, assembles an astonishing array of talent: Jack Hawkins (The Cruel Sea), Richard Conte (The Godfather) and Oscar nominees Vittorio de Sica and Dan Dailey star as the four men chosen to pursue justice and defeat tyranny worldwide; their regular co-stars include Avengers star Honor Blackman, as glamorous secretary Nicole, Lisa Gastoni, June Thorburn, and Andrew Keir (Quatermass and the Pit).

The series’ cosmopolitan flavour and stylish settings paved the way for many later series that combined crimefighting adventure with the glamour of exotic locations and a touch of romance. The Four Just Men garnered rave reviews from critics and proved a major success for ITC, and is notable for a unique format in which each of the protagonists and their co-stars appeared in turn, in separate episodes and storylines. Judi Dench, Mai Zetterling, Alan Bates, Jane Asher and Patrick Troughton are among the guests making early television appearances in this classic series, first screened in 1959 and 1960, and now available for the first time on DVD.

Four men who last met in battle during the Allied invasion of Italy in 1943 are summoned to Foxgrove Manor, to hear a message recorded by their wartime commanding officer, Colonel Bacon, shortly before his death. He appeals to them to form a quartet dedicated to fighting injustice and the abuse of power, and has bequeathed a large sum of money for that purpose. London MP and amateur sleuth Ben Manfred, American reporter Tim Collier, New York lawyer Jeff Ryder and Italian hotelier Ricco Poccari agree to carry out the Colonel’s dying wish, and their epic mission takes the Four Just Men across Europe and beyond.

Codename Kyril

#42 Post by John Johnson »

Among an illustrious cast that includes Joss Ackland, Peter Vaughan, Richard E. Grant and Denholm Elliott, Edward Woodward (Callan) stars opposite Ian Charleson (Chariots of Fire) in a taut and skilfully plotted Cold War thriller.

Thought to be one of the last great made-for television spy series, produced as the Cold War era came to an end, Codename: Kyril offers complex characterisations and an intelligent treatment of the classic espionage theme of trust and betrayal. This compelling, evocative series is adapted by the award-winning John Hopkins – whose previous credits include Smiley’s People and Z Cars – and co-produced by Harlech Television veteran and Primetime Emmy winner Patrick Dromgoole (Robin of Sherwood). This release presents the complete four-part mini-series (usually only seen these days in a radically edited ‘TV movie’ form), made by HTV and originally screened in 1989.

The KGB has a particularly evasive spy to eliminate: a high-ranking Kremlin traitor who has been leaking crucial secrets to London. Bucharensky, code-name Kyril, is ordered to defect to catch the attention of the intelligence services of both East and West, setting himself up as a target and drawing fi re from all sides as he makes his way across Europe to London; the object of his mission is to panic the traitor into making a mistake. But waiting in London is Kyril’s deadliest enemy: Royston, a KGB mole whose life now depends upon silencing Kyril before he can disclose Royston’s identity as a Soviet double agent...

A surreal crime/fantasy adventure series in the mould of the The Avengers, The Corridor People ran for only four episodes yet has garnered considerable cult devotion.

A host of unlikely characters include Kronk, a paternal CID agent, his henchmen Inspector Blood and Sergeant Hound, and American, Bogart-worshipping private eye Phil Scrotty; each episode sees them pitched against the avaricious schemes of Syrie Van Epp, a beautiful, treacherous Persian millionairess.

Written by Edward Boyd (The Odd Man), the series stars larger-than-life character actor John Sharp and Elizabeth Shepherd, the actress originally cast as Emma Peel; guest stars include Windsor Davies and Pauline Collins. With wildly inventive storylines, offbeat, often humorous dialogue in which characters frequently break the fourth wall, strikingly original photography and heavily stylised sets, it’s no surprise to find it described as ‘the Twin Peaks of its day’, or akin to ‘a lost Harold Pinter play with an added dash of Monty Python’..!

This unique series, unscreened since its original transmission in 1966, is now available on DVD for the very first time.

"Let's see. Insubordinate. Insolent. A trickster. Perhaps with criminal tendencies. Well, that last one may just be put to good use…"
