Mamma Mia DVD Is UK's Best-Seller

#1 Post by John Johnson »

Mamma Mia! The Movie is the biggest-selling DVD in the UK ever, the Official Charts Company has declared.
The release, which was issued five weeks ago, racked up enough sales during the Christmas break to become the first disc to sell more than five million DVDs.

It has overtaken Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl, which sold 4.7 million copies in the UK.

It rounded off a phenomenal year for Mamma Mia! The Movie, which has already been named as the fastest-selling DVD, shifting 1.669 million on its first day of sale.

In mid-December, it was announced that the movie had overtaken Titanic to become the highest grossing film in the UK, with a turnover of more than £69m.

The movie soundtrack has been confirmed as the biggest selling compilation of 2008, with a million copies flying off the shelves.

The Official Charts Company's all-time list covers all sales from the launch of the DVD format in Spring 1998 through to the end of 2008.

The two movies are the only two DVDs to have sold more than four million copies in their lifetime in the UK.

The Lord Of the Rings: Fellowship Of The Ring is in third place on the all-time list, selling 3.9 million.

Official Charts Company managing director Martin Talbot said: "Right from its release, Mamma Mia! has been a record breaker - when it was issued on DVD, it became the fastest seller of all time."

The biggest selling titles in the 10 years of DVD are otherwise dominated by action-adventure titles such as Pirates Of The Caribbean, the Lord Of The Rings, Casino Royale and Gladiator.

Makes sense. European folks are driven wild by MAMMA MIA, it took in nearly $600 million worldwide at the box-office.

What a horrible movie though. GREASE 2 was more entertaining!

I get if you are an Abba fan you'd enjoy the movie, I do respect that. And I typically like musicals. And I understand the mass popularity of ABBA, even if I'm not a big fan.

Objectively speaking, I truly felt the film was embarrassing. Horribly directed, amateurishly choreographed, the cast's mugging was almost unbearable to look at. I knew the "story" was flimsy and there's not much to it, but I wasn't prepared for just how terribly produced the film was. I couldn't even watch it in one sitting, I had to turn it off after 45 minutes.

For me I can't remember a worse movie that's made so much money internationally. I give coproducer Tom Hanks and the production people credit in this -- it was shrewdly cast with a variety of "international" stars to help it sell overseas, in addition to the built in appeal of Abba. And I understand if you are in love with Abba that you'd enjoy hearing the music.

But as a movie, I have to confess that I positively hated it in every possible capacity, to a degree I haven't really with any musical I've seen before in my lifetime. And that includes flops like GREASE 2 and CAN'T STOP THE MUSIC.

I completely agree... I never liked ABBA much anyway and even before I moved to Sweden I was bombarded with their music every day, but even if you are a fan I thought you had to admit that the film is horrible. Keep listening to the CDs, if you like ABBA, but please don't find a movie just because it has ABBA songs in it great... bad renditions of their songs I might add.
I wouldnt be surprised to see the score ending up with an oscar nom, as they actually sent it in for consideration!!! For what? Now ABBA should get an oscar for best score which is just their songs without vocals??? Maybe the academy makes an exception there, too, just like they did with TDK (I laugh my ass off if TDK doesnt get a nomination for score... haha)...

this is really an outstandingly bad movie... I had to suffer through it in a plane, almost got a seizure! haha...
It is really just bad and not bad on a level that it would be funny...
