REVENGE's Emily VanCamp for the female lead -- very nice. I liked Hayley Atwell but if she's not coming back (and she isn't), this is miles ahead of the names they were throwing around (Anna Kendrick, a group of supermodels, some girl from "Community," etc.) previously.

Actually this is the first bit of good news I've seen associated with this sequel -- most of it hasn't been encouraging, especially since they announced the TV brothers of "Community" were directing it (can you say "inexpensive options"). VanCamp is the best thing on REVENGE which had a really good first season but has hit the wall in Season 2. She's attractive and a very fine actress, who shouldn't seem out of place in a Marvel film as well.

Drat...I was hoping the rumors about Mary Elizabeth Winstead would turn out to be true.

I do love MEW but if it's not her (or the girl from Growing Pains who played the waitress in The Avengers lol), this is Marvel's best casting choice in forever. Vancamp is seriously talented and attractive -- she does so much for a bubblegum soap like REVENGE than, say, the likes of Katie Holmes or Michelle Williams ever did on DAWSON'S CREEK, doling out the occasional fisticuffs along with romantic material. Vancamp's also not going to have Colbie Smulders' problem with fitting in this kind of movie (I like Smulders on How I Met Your Mother, but whether it was her, Whedon's direction or his stiff dialogue, she seemed ill at ease in The Avengers).

Then again, I think Vancamp's a better actress than Scarlett Johansson too. I think she's got a future outside TV and this is likely the project that'll do it.

I'm also relieved because nothing of what I had seen from this film made me encouraged before hearing this news. Now I'm sort of looking forward to it.

I am bummed that the girl from the first one, Hayley Atwell won't be back, although since this sequel is set in the present, that makes sense. Also I'll miss Joe Johnston, but hopefully he can go off and make his Boba Fett movie for Disney now

Johnston always seems to get a bum rap from people, doesn't he? Don't start MJ on Jurassic Park III (which I liked) but his track record in genre films is pretty solid (Cap, Rocketeer, Jumanji, even the derided Wolfman had a lot of good things in it). Not to mention October Sky which was a fine movie.

Definite comedown going from Johnston to two TV-comedy director siblings whose only feature is YOU ME AND DUPREE.

lol. She doesn't do much for me as Black Widow, I confess -- in fact I wonder if there's something wrong with me, but I felt she got way, way too much screen time in THE AVENGERS.

I'm guessing it'll be an obligatory cameo in Cap and that's about it. I hated how IRON MAN 2 stopped dead for all the scenes with her and Samuel L. It was more like an Avengers trailer than a standalone film. Hopefully they won't make that mistake again with these films.

Good question. I think the movie he starred in with Brad Pitt (SPY GAME?) was probably the last financially successful acting gig for him. Directing wise, it's been even drier...do we go all the way back to THE HORSE WHISPERER? THE LEGEND OF BAGGER VANCE (remember that pos?) grossed $30 million and had a budget at least twice that.
