Disney and “Alice in Wonderland” director Tim Burton are getting back in business, this time with “Dumbo.” The Oscar-nominated filmmaker is attached to direct a live-action version of the animated classic.
Ehren Kruger, who wrote the last three “Transformers” movies, recently turned in a draft. According to sources, Disney execs are very pleased with the script and wanted to quickly land an A-list director.
Justin Springer, who worked on Tron: Legacy as well as Oblivion, is producing with Kruger.
The original story followed a ridiculed circus elephant, who, with the help of a mouse, works to achieve his full potential. Burton’s film will be a mix of live-action and animation.
Following the success of “Maleficent” and “Alice,” Disney has been busy developing several of its animated classics into live-action features. “Cinderella,” opening this Friday, is looking at a $60 million opening weekend and the studio is also in pre-production on “Beauty and the Beast” starring Emma Watson, Dan Stevens and Luke Evans.
Burton, repped by WME, most recently helmed “Big Eyes” for The Weinstein Co.
