In a way I can actually understand the remake element seeing as it's been 20 years and Devlin/Emmerich never participated in anything other than the original movie despite having plans for sequels.

He's also right that the movie stunned people because it did unexpectedly well when sci-fi wasn't necessarily burning it up at the box office as it now.
