WILLOW Sequel Series - Canceled, No Longer Available on Disney+

#1 Post by AndyDursin »

"A creative lean-forward"

Not that I have any fondness for WILLOW, but apparently if Disney is willing to go "there," what WON'T they say no to?

The enchanting world of “Willow,” created by George Lucas, is officially coming to the small screen.

Disney Plus has confirmed a sequel series taking place years after the events of the original Ron Howard-directed pic is heading into production next year. Howard is returning to the project as executive producer alongside original star Warwick Davis, who will once again play the titular hero Willow Ufgood.

The series has also tapped “Crazy Rich Asians” and “In the Heights” director Jon M. Chu to helm the pilot and exec produce. Jonathan Kasdan (“Solo”) and Wendy Mericle (“Arrow”) will serve as showrunners.

“Willow” the series hails from Lucasfilm and represents the company’s first non-“Star Wars” venture since 2015. The show will introduce all-new characters to the magical realm of fairy queens and two-headed Eborsisk monsters. News of the official greenlight from Disney Plus comes over a year after the project was first reported as coming down the pipeline.

The original film centered on Davis’ Willow, who reluctantly forced into playing a critical role in protecting a special infant named Elora Danan from an evil queen (Jean Marsh). A prophecy told that Elora would bring the queen’s downfall. Willow was helped along the way by a mercenary swordsman, played by Val Kilmer. It also starred Joanne Whalley, Billy Barty and Kevin Pollak.

“Growing up in the’80s, ‘Willow’ has had a profound effect on me,” said Chu in a statement. “The story of the bravest heroes in the least likely places allowed me, an Asian-American kid growing up in a Chinese restaurant looking to go to Hollywood, to believe in the power of our own will, determination and of course, inner magic. So the fact that I get to work with my heroes from Kathleen Kennedy to Ron Howard is bigger than a dream come-true. It’s a bucket-list moment for me. Jon Kasdan and Wendy Mericle have added such groundbreaking new characters and delightful surprises to this timeless story that I can’t wait for the world to come along on this epic journey with us.”

Bob Dolman, writer of the original film, serves as consulting producer, with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy on board as an EP alongside Michelle Rejwan. Howard’s Imagine Television is producnig, with the company’s Roopesh Parekh and Hannah Friedman in place as co-executive producers. Julia Cooperman will produce.

“It’s creatively exciting to not only revisit the world and characters first conceived by George Lucas, Bob Dolman and myself but to see it take flight in such fresh, fun and cinematic ways through the imagination of Jon Kasdan and Team Willow,” added Howard. “This isn’t a nostalgic throw-back, it’s a creative lean-forward and it’s a blast to be a part of it all.”

Let's hope they don't use the terrible sequel books as inspiration. The podcast "372 Pages We'll Never Get Back" (a sort of MST3K for bad books co-hosted by Mike Nelson) took on Shadow Moon, an official sequel to Willow co-written by George Lucas and Chris Claremont. The hosts immediately regretted it as the book was so bad, even they had a tough time with it and advised their listeners not to read along.

At this point, "nostalgic" means "any movie made between 1977 and 1989".

I have no nostalgia for Willow, I saw it in theaters when I was 13 and have always thought it was completely blah. Including Horner's score, one of my least favorite of his for that genre.

I didn't see Willow until VHS (my mother kept referring to it as "Willard" ), and it was...okay. Great F/X for the period, and Horner's score has some pleasant flourishes, but it's seriously unimaginative, like Lucas really wanted to make Lord Of The Rings, but couldn't get the rights, so he just dashed off a half-hearted ripoff and handed it to a blah, formless filmmaker like Ron Howard. And watching it again when it was first released to DVD almost 20 years ago to cash in on the initial LOTR/Harry Potter magic/fantasy craze (with the unbelievable tagline "Before there were wizards, before there were Hobbits, there was Willow!" ) didn't improve matters much. It's just your standard-issue fantasy template, and without the involving characters or narrative quirks that would have made it stand out from a very crowded 80's sword & sorcery market. Yeah, it gave the F/X world "morphing", but that's all of value to come from it.

It's a totally charmless movie. As bland as the characters are in Legend, you at least get physical production and scoring that are second to none. Willow is so drab to look at, and just so formulaic...plus miscast Val Kilmer and his ex-wife and some of the most painful "comic relief" in history lol

I was really looking forward to Willow before it was released -- the prospect of George Lucas doing a medieval fantasy burst with promise, and James Horner seemed certain to write another score as exciting and as great as Krull.

Didn't really deliver though. Lucas' nods to The Hidden Fortress were more overt (which wasn't necessarily a bad thing), but mainly, the film's characters were just repurposed from Star Wars -- Willow=Luke, Madmartigan=Han, the pixies=the droids, Queen What's-Her-Name=Palpatine, General Kael=Vader, etc.

Terrible "world-building" too, with no sense of of how the kingdoms / territories are laid-out, governed, etc., no consistent logic to how magic works in this world (nor to the parameters and limitations of those who use it).

In some ways it's a good-looking film, and the New Zealand locations are gorgeous and majestic (and much-better captured here than in LOTR). Horner's score has its moments, but has a lot of clunky elements too -- like the obtrusive shakuhachi, and that terrible attempt to imitate The Dark Crystal's "Pod Dance" (and even using it to open the end title!).

I remember at the time, Silva Screen were hoping to get the rights to release the album, they even sent the producers a copy of their recent Krull LP, but of course, they were blown out of the water, when Virgin Records announced they were releasing the score.

True! Those Snowdonia slate quarries were put to good use!

Though Willow has always made me chuckle a bit, as it is obviously summer in the the footage shot in the UK, whereas it is winter in the New Zealand scenes!

The Mission was a massive cash cow for Virgin Records, and obviously convinced them that "soundtracks are where the money is!" -- seeing as they released copious scores over the next couple of years. But I'm sure the sales of Rampage and A Time of Destiny persuaded them that maybe there wasn't such a huge market for soundtracks after all!

On a side note, the 1967 Doctor Who story, 'The Abominable Snowmen was filmed in Wales, doubling as Tibet. Location filming was done in Nant Ffrancon Pass, North Wales. Filming in Wales was so cold that Frazer Hines wore rolled up trousers under his kilt.

Feels like an Amazon Prime type of show. The kind I'd never watch.
